RS Knock Sensor
I have a 1998 2.5 RS with a recently replaced engine due to headgasket failure. My CEL went on and I got the code checked out as a knock sensor. The CEL cleared itself, and seems to be running normally. Somehow i ended up being low on oil, and needed to replace 1.5 quarts. No leaks under the car. the closest cylender to the passenger seems to have oil leaking down the side. Do you think that i might have gotten a bad tank of gas, causing the knock sensor light to go on? What about the missing oil?
hmm. Who replaced the engine? what was exactly repalced?
The knock sensor is an issue on cars that have softened motor mounts over the years, and this trips the sensor. The sensor then retards timing and you got yourself one slow/bucking car (trust me... i know this well! lol...). What i did was replace the knock sensor. Problem solved for now. I'm waiting on new motor mounts (STi- Group Ns) which should stiffen the motor up so far that the knock sensor shouldnt ever act up.
Now, if that's not your case, and you had an actual knock event worthy of the CEL, you could have some serious enough detonation that 1 of your cylinders has been damaged. 1.5 L of oil is no joke! Did you notice smoke from the tail pipe?

No smoke from tailpipe that i noticed. I don't think that I am burning oil, it is probably a small leak. It does "buck" sometimes but its not even close to being unbearable. How much did a knock sensor cost? I think that the knock sensor doesn't work properly or that I got a bad tank of gas, because my car has been running normally ever since, and I have driven fairly high miles. Your advice and wisdom is appreciated
Thank you
Thank you
I got mine for free from a fellow subie owner who no longer needed it. I would contact your local subie dealership for the cost of a new one. They are located on the block, to the right, below the throttle body. The sensor is held on by using a screw/bolt, banjo bolt style.
