oil filter sux

the outside metal on the oil filter is really thin. i tightened it on to tight and made a dent in the filter, next thing i know a few weeks later im leaking oil out of it. and you can only see it while the motor is running, so i spent 30 mins trying to locate the leak. just beware and it sould only be as tight as you can make it with your hand.

You are only supposed to tighten the filter 1/2 turn past where the seal touches the block. If you're tightening it enough to dent the filter, the problem is not the filter, it's what you're doing to it.

If you're determined on monkeyf***ing the filter on there, get a CM Filters spin on billet filter. If you can dent that while putting it on, I'll eat my hat. (www.cmfilters.com)

The oil filter really should only be hand tight - you should really be able to remove and install it by hand. (make sure you oil the seal beforehand, too) The filter wrench is really only supposed to be used to remove the filter (when it might be too hot to grab comfortably)

I made the mistake of putting on the filter too tight once, leaked oil. I still use the filter wrench, I first put on the filter and tighten it until I feel the gasket touch, then I turn it one full turn and then back it off a 1/4 turn. No problems so far. I'm just happy that this filter is easy to get to. On my last car the filter was in the hardest place to reach spent many a minutes trying to get the stupid filter off.

Thanks for the neat link. I agree with most of the breakin procedure, except that I expect that Subaru has fitted all the parts to close tolerances at the factory, and that breakin ought to be pretty easy, certainly not as arduous as the described motor cycle affair! BTW: was the cycle engine 2-cycle? I have always just gone for short distances, rest, longer and faster, longer and faster for short periods, and on an on, for about the first 1.5-2.5Kmiles, with 2 or 3 oil/filter changes. My theory is that max wear comes in the first minute, and less as time (strokes of the piston on the walls, etc.,) increase. Same applies to transmission gears and bearings, and all other parts that rub and roll together (brakes, too).

Keep up the great posts.
