Negotiation question when adding options/accessories
Hi everyone,
Im looking at buying a new wrx soon, i had a question about adding options, I've read that you can negotiate options at invoice price, but if they dont have the car i want in stock with a spoiler for example, then should you also expect to pay extra cost for labor for installation as well? how much will this usually be?
thanks!

this is what i would do in general negotiation....
- show that you really want to buy a car so they won't think you are just wasting their time and joking around.
- stick to what you are willing to pay for (assuming it's reasonable).
- able to get up and walk out if they disagree.
I got my 01 this way.... $500 over invoice with good number of options.

Make sure you call in before you go to the dealership. If you set up an appointment then they will treat you much better. I experienced this first hand. The salesman was awesome and there was no haggling. He gave me the bottom line price and i was so impressed, b/c it was lower than what i was even aiming for!

Dont ever buy on the first day, always go to at least 2 dealers.
Never sign ANYTHING untill you are sure your going to buy from them.
When you are ready to buy have the financing done with your bank or credit union so you can pay cash to the dealer and not hassle with their finance department.
Know what you want and stand firm when you say no to the extras. Extras should never cost more because of labor.
When you are ready to buy, give them a time limit to get the deal done. Say that you only have an hour to buy the car. Every time they pull something or give you a price that you think that they can do better than, walk out. Watch the price drop everytime you get up to leave. If they dont try and do better then go to a different dealer.
Make sure they know not to waste your time.

heres some help
ok ready? i'm gonna help u out just a bit.... since i myself do sell cars i will make u a list
first off find a reputable dealership... that is very important
2nd- u have the internet@your fingertips find what u want
-although internet "invoices" are nice i have never found
- one that is completely accurate-because every dealership
has different operating costs.
3rd- having your own bank is nice but try to give the opportunity
to offer you financing with one of their lenders...sometimes
they do have better rates.
4th- if you don't want to negotiate tell the salesman so upfront.
but if you do... keep in mind that the dealers business is to
make money(not lose it) but see#1
5th when it comes to meeting "in the middle" just remember
the deal really is in the hands of the dealership. the actual
manager makes the decision to sell the car at whatever
agreed. bottom line is if you are not happy . . just walk.
6th- as for getting things at cost or just over cost.. good luck..
especially on an sti(only 4,500 made 1st year).
7th- if in negotiation ask as many questions that come to mind. it
helps you and the salesman identify any objections that may
hinder you from getting a good deal.
8th- never sign anything you don't understand . . i see so many
people just signing papers without really listening to me
when i am explaining it.
9th- be honest with your salesperson- i know that sounds
funny. but you won't believe how many customers have lied
to me in hopes that("holding out") would help them. in
reality i just lost respect for them and their car was sold to
someone else.
10th- price versus cost...if the car you are seeking is THE ONE
then shop every dealer for the best price. but remember
price may not neccesarily be the only factor. you mave
have an awesome price from the worst dealership in
america. . . thats when the cost(hassles, no follow-up,
poor service) takes over your best price from "ABC"
dealership.
