maybe buying a 2.5RS
i've found a '00 2.5RS near me. It's a blue 5-spd with 64k miles on it, for $11,995. I'm new to Subarus (i own a '90 toyota celica right now), but i know a little bit about them, and if i buy the car, i know what i want to do with it (i.e. turboing the car, and making it autocross, if not rally-capable). can anyone give me some info on the car, like the major strengths and weaknesses of it?

I don't know why it took so long to get a turboed Impreza in the states because the GC/GM SERIOUSLY lacks in power.
Another issue to watch out for is the transmission. If you are buying a used RS make sure the transmission wasn't hammered on. I'm sure you have heard of the trans' issues but as long as you know how to shift and don't slam it everytime, you should be ok. I drive mine like a bandit but am always very cautious about shifting. It is still solid and smooth.
You will love this car. Just remeber to rotate your tires often.
