I really want an 02'-06 WRX but......
the ones in my $10,000 price range for sale have 90k + miles on them. I am looking for a nice daily that will last around 4 years or so (roughly up to 140k miles) and I fear a major engine issue or trans issue - are my concerns valid or am I just being overly cautious? How much would it be to rebuild the engine or trans? I'm thinkin at least $1000 or two for either for a major repair.
I really love the 02-06 WRX Wagon. Somebody please tell me that a car w/ 90k miles will run up to 150k miles or so w/out any major problems, or that a major engine/trans repair or rebuild or replacement won't cost too much.
Chime in experienced Suby owners and enthusiasts....

$10k sounds about right for a 90k+ mile car.
I am pretty sure that there is a member on here who has hit 250K miles with out any major rebuilds.
however I do know that the transmissions on the 02 and 03 models are known to go out.
IMO I believe that all Subarus (with regular maintenance and proper driving) should last about 200k miles.

My '06 is at 80k and hopefully it last to 200k without much trouble, My brother commuted it for the first 50k all freeway miles around the bay everyday, which includes no warm ups or cool down, just start and go. I've been taking pretty good care of it since I've owned it but hopefully his first 50k doesn't screw me in the long run. Hand me down FTL? FTW? whatever... haha

I totally agree - if I take care of it, it should take care of me. But the thing is - I will not know if the previous owner completely took care of it. Sellers can say they've done all of the maintenance but the reality could be that they haven't. Myself I do most maintenance myself (fluids, trans, engine, diffs, ignition) on my own, so I won't have a vehicle service history other than my own.
One other question - how much is it for a low mileage engine and trans? - in the event that a motor or trans would blow on me. I had a 240sx w/ an SR20 and I know those front clips would go for around 2k, but I also understand that the EJ20 is a much new engine so that means more $$$.
