how many miles is it recommended to change the spark plugs? im at 53k

 

The Subaru maintenance schedule recommends replacing spark plugs every 30 months or 30,000 miles, whichever comes first. Link at bottom of maintenance page will display a schedule chart.

There should also be a maintenance schedule accompanying your Owner's Manual in a separate booklet or pamphlet.

 

does this work for a 04 wrx as well

 

its the same engine

 

But things have been moved around a little. Fuel filter is no longer in the engine bay. Moved to the tank, but spark plug change should be the same.

 

I had read these posts and decided this was something I could do myself. I'm 63 year old retiree and my Subaru dealer said they would charge about $110 to replace the four sparkplugs, leading me to think they must really be hard to change. It turned out to be far easier than I thought. After going to my local Harbor Freight store in Daytona Beach and picking up an extended spark plug socket, then my local auto store and picking up a Haynes manual, I proceeded to follow the instructions from the manual and this forum.

The two plugs on the drivers side only required the removal of the windshield washer tank, not the battery (my Forrester is non-turbo). From start to finish replacing these two plugs took about an hour because I work slow, first reading the manual and then proceeding with caution. The following morning I decided to do the two plugs on the passenger side and it was equally as easy. Once the air intake parts were removed, the plugs were very easy to get to and extract. Again, replacing those two plugs took about an hour.

I think I could do all four plugs in a little over an hour if I decide to do it in one shot. I really thought the extended spark plug socket was a great suggestion.

Patience is a virtue and proceding with caution while replacing your first set of spark plugs is always wise. Maintaining your vehicle is not a pit lane exercise where every second counts.

 

Just changed the plugs on my 02 WRX. Took 2 hours all together. Perfect instructions. Thanks alot

 

Thankyou for the `How To` ; it took me 2:30min to finish because i cleaned my K&N filter and it took me forever to find a short 10mm socket I dropped

 

Did this today, these directions are perfect.. too me a bit over two hours, most of which was just taking my time, making sure everything was done right, definitely can do it faster next time.

only problem ocurred was UBER tight spaces, and I have big hands... other than that... easy...

I definitely recommend the spark plug socket with a ujoint. I did not have it, and had to fish my socket out with pliers twice :-)
