How do you know you had 1/16th of a tank?

If there was something in your tank taking up room, you would most likely be experiencing fuel system and delivery issues. If you're not, you are likely just getting better mileage. Gas pumps are quite regulated and engineered to automatically shut off at a consistent point.

Don't stop and get gas until the dash light comes on. Your car should still have a couple gallons of gas in it, even when the needle hits "E."

Gas gauges are not perfect... I've owned many cars and they are never accurate.

Are you running the defrost? The defrost or the A/C really cut into your gas mileage; when I use them they cost me about 30 miles per tank.

The gas gauge itself is incredibly innacurate. Mine reads 3/4 of a tank at 100 miles, seemingly indicating that I am going to get 400 miles out of the tank. By 1/2 of a tank I have gone 250 miles. Then, the last half of the tank (according to the gauge) dissapears in less than 50 miles!

Also, the yellow light comes on whenever the hell it feels like it. If I obey the yellow light and put gas in the car, I have put in anything from 11.3 gallons to 14.2.
