Forester or Legacy?
Hello! A first-time buyer considering a Subaru here.
I've been looking at the Subaru brand because of the reputation for safety as well as the availability of all-wheel drive. It's going to be more of a family car but I'll probably get the most use out of it.
I'm currently leaning Legacy but the family likes the Forester because of the higher stance of the car. How is the Legacy in the snow? It has the same all-wheel drive system, but the ground clearance is less and so is the height of the seating position. Does that diminish its ability in any way?
Thanks in advance!

It doesn't diminish the ability of the car unless you need the ground clearance. It will be the same on gravel roads the only problem you might run into is when you have higher snow.
I bet the people that drive in snow will have a better perspective on that though. I don't drive in much snow in Rancho Cordova.
The only difference in the all-wheel drive systems is that the Forester X's and the Legacy 2.5i's don't have a rear limited slip diffs as where the XS and XT do as well as the 2.5GT Legacy's and Outbacks.

Well, that's the thing... I'm not sure if ground clearance is that big a factor. Forester is 190 mm (7.5 in), while the Legacy is 150 mm (5.9 in).
A family member talked about how it was hard to get over a snowplow bump (the ones left by snowplows on the edges of the road) from the driveway in a sedan, but the cars he had experience with were all rear-wheel drive cars. I want to know whether situations like this would favour ground clearance where 4 cm makes a difference, or AWD alone is enough.

IMO, I like the Forester for it's interior height and ability to haul stuff. It's a bit ugly, but I'd consider it if my wrx got totaled.

Car Info: 19' Impreza Sport Manual / 99 Miata / 13' OB
I have a Forester XT and an Outback VDC Wagon. Both are good but there is more room in the Outback for people and stuff. While the cargo area is similar in size the Outback's room is more useable. Both are good but the OB has a better ride. Because of the VDC it's much better in bad weather too.

Depends I guess, the VDC is specific to the Outback I think. But if you compare the non VDC OB to a non VDC Legacy, I think they will be similar except how deep the snow you will be able to go in before you start snow plowing with the front. I have some info here about how systems work:

I think for fun driving the Manual is nice but for bad weather the auto is better.
