Question Depreciation Question

Ok so I have a 2005 WRX/STI WRB/G it Has 12829 miles exactly. My wife went to Honda just to see what a dealer might give her for a trade in, I happen to know that specific dealership and half of the people that work there. I also know the salesmen that she had talk to. They gave her a quote of $23,750. Am I getting this straight I just last year buy this thing at 34000 all said and done and this is the trade-in value? Holy crap this is terrible, DO subaru's not have a high re-sell value? Or should we go to a different dealer.

Subaru's have a great resale value as far as I have ever seen. A dealership will rape you if they can everytime. You trade that car in for 23 and they will have it on the lot for 30 within a day or two.

As far as trade in value goes for any car, your lucky even to get wholesale price from a dealership. Impreza 05 is right, these cars have great re sale value and considering it is a rare car they will try and get every penny of profit out of the deal to make a buck especially due to a pretty large market for cars like the STi.

yeah just remember that a car dealership is there to make money. even if you know the guy who owns the place, and everyone who works there, that dealership does not exist to give you great trade-in values.

The resale value is ok. Not the best, but what can you expect. The stealership will always try to rip you off so they can turn a profit later. It's a business and they'll make money by any means necessary.

Even if the dealer gave you a decent amount for your trade-in, they'd rip you off somewhere else or try to. The best bet is to sell it private party. I'm sure someone in your area is in the market for an 05 STI. It might take longer, but do you need to sell it right away?

No I dont need to sell it soon, just was wondering if that was a average trade-in quote. I have always sold my cars privately. Thanks

That's probably the best way then. At least you can get close to what you want or maybe even more.

A lot of times the dealerships don't like having used cars on the lots... especially when it's not the same brand as what they are selling. Our local dealer (Ron Price Subaru) didn't even want my Mazdaspeed Protege. They called 4 different brokers they work with and got me a decent price. I'm sure we could have gotten more private party sale, but it wasn't worth the hassle.

Wow, that is so far from true. A dealer stands to make 11-22% more from the sale of a used car rather than a new one, perhaps even 40% more if they can get you to fall for an in-house finance package. A good friend of mine has sold cars for Lexus for years, and he accepts trades for $11,000 and sells them for $19,999 every day of the week (vs. the $1200 markup he can make on a brand-new one). The only reason a dealer would turn down a trade is if they didn't physically have room on the lot. There is no problem with mixing brands, as well; most dealerships list the cars they sell online or in catalogs, where the fact that it is a Subaru on a Cadillac lot doesn't matter a bit.
