Cleaning up my engine.

I want to do some detailing on my engine, make it look nice and purty. I have engine degreaser for the actual motor and i have cleaner for the plastic parts. What parts should i be careful with when using the degreaser? I hear you can do some damage if you use it improperly. thanks.

I detail my motor 3x a year and i used to be a professional detailer and have done this procedure on hundreds of cars.

1. Spray some "Simple Green" general degreaser or equivalent to the motor.
2. If you have an electronic ignition as oppposed to the distibutor driven type you do not have to worry about protecting any componets of the engine(all electronics are sealed). With a pressure washer spray the motor with water removing any and all grease off the engine and engine compartment.
3. With motor still wet with water, spray motor and engine compartment with Armor-All or equivalent to all surfaces on the engine and compartment.
4. Let dry or let the product absorb into surfaces before you drive the vehicle.
5. After the product has dryed to the surface, with a clean cloth, remove any excess oil residue left from the Armor-All or whatever brand you choose to use from exposed surfaces.
6. The Armor-All works well and conditions the rubber hoses and keeps them moisturized. It also gives your motor a great shine. Remember, clean motors run cooler and are more efficent than dirty ones.

Great tips! Thanks... It's the same procedure our dealership pros use and when the used cars roll out to the 'pre-owned' lot they look like new again! +1

This sounds easy, my only hang up for doing my engine was all of the electrical stuff. So basically since my car has no distributor, I really don't have to worry about taping or covering anything? I know that everything should be sealed, but I don't want to ruin anything electrical.

Just out of curiosity, this is no risk to the alternator?

Also, why does the Subaru manual recommend against steam-cleaning? That seems to be a pretty low-impact cleaning method, as the steam evaporates better than room-temp water...
