This is not a question that can be answered with the information you have posted. When the check engine light comes on, it means that one or more of over a hundred different trouble codes has been set in the ECU. In order to find out what the problem is, you must get the car scanned to retrieve the code(s) from memory, then the appropriate diagnostic procedure for those codes is followed to find and fix the actual cause.
In states other than CA, Autozone does free scans. In CA, I believe they may allow you to borrow the scanner for a small deposit and do it yourself in the parking lot. Alternately you can ask in your local forum for someone with a scanner to check it for you. There is probably someone nearby who has one.
If you filled up with gas just before the light came on, check to see if the gas cap is on tightly. If it isn't that may be the cause, but even if you find it loose you should still get the scan just to be sure.

did you put a CEL fix on your car? I put a CEL fix on my car and now I just threw one. did you put on a down pipe which threw a CEL or a CEL fix which could have gone bad

Don't disconnect the battery. Doing so may make the light go out at least temporarily, but it doesn't fix anything, and will also erase the code from memory so it can't be retrieved. This makes diagnosing and repairing the cause more difficult.
As long as you don't clear the code with a scanner or by disconnecting the battery, it will stay in memory even if the light goes out.

There is no specific thing to replace with this code, that's why he couldn't tell you. The cause must be found by following the proper troubleshooting procedure, only then can the repairs be made. There are a number of possible causes.
Your best bet is probably to take it to either a dealer, or a good local shop that specializes in Subarus. You should be able to get recommendations in your local forum.

When the cap 'clicks', that is tight enough. You didn't state the trouble code for your check engine light. As the previous posts in this thread (and others) state, getting the code read is the first step to figuring out the problem. Also, please read the earlier post on disconnecting the battery - this does NOT fix the problem that generated the CEL (check engine light).

I have 2001 RS, and my baby was hesitating while driving, and I replaced the fuel filter and air filter...didn't help the hesitating, and the check engine light just came out this afternoon, so I bought a code scanner tonite, and I will try to scan it and see if I can fix it tomorrow...I will keep you posted...
