This means that a trouble code has been stored, you need to get the car scanned to find out what the code is. On the newer cars the cruise light will flash in addition to the check engine light coming on, this is to get your attention. The cruise control will also not function until the code has been checked and the light extinguished.
If your car is stock and under warranty, just take it to a dealer and have them scan it and make any necessary repairs. Should this not be an option for some reason, you can go to Autozone if there is one near you and they will scan it for free. Also you can check in your local forum for someone with a scanner, many people have them.
Once you know what the exact code is, you can look online for information on what causes that code and how to deal with it.
