CEL after getting gas. 2004 WRX

Hello,

I filled up my car with 93 octane today and some wierd things happened. First the woman came out and told me I didn't pay for the 5$ of gas I bought. I told her I just put in 27$ worth the premium and paid $ with my credit card. She told me to park the car and get inside. So I did and we straightened it out and they printed me a receipt. I started the car drove down the road a bit and noticed the CEL light was on. I pulled into a side street, turned the car off and took the gas gap off. I then tightened it til it clicked a few times and then started the car....still CEL. So I drove back to work on the highway, looked at the boost gauge a few times in 3rd and 4th and everything looked good. Car drives normal, but the CEL light is still on. I called the dealer and told them what happened. They told me to tighten the cap (even though I said I did) and that it might take a couple of days for the light to shut off. Is this true? Should I be concerned? The real kicker is in a couple of weeks I'm planning on doing a stage on kit and up-pipe.... I look forward to your input.

Yes the light stays on for awhile unless you have a clearing tool like say the accessport which can read and clear error codes.

If it really bugs you there is always the disconnect the main battery option for a minute to clear the codes.

So I drove the car around for a while, about 20 miles. I had it on full boost a few times, took some crazy corners, mashed the throttle in 3rd, 4th and 5th...stuff like that. I went to pick up some chinese food, got back in the car started it up and the light went away. I'm guessing it was the gas cap.....but I remember putting it on pretty tight. I also remember taking the gas pump out of the holder and some liquid pouring on the side of my car and I wiped it off. So maybe I got a bit of bad gas? I dunno...we'll see what happens.

It's also been a known problem with these cars. Some people keep getting these ck engine lights for the gas cap as well.

No I had the car off. The light is still off, so all seems well for now.

great to hear that.im sure that is what it was.there are many variables that the ecu looks at before it checks the evaporative system.fuel level, pressure, temp in tank before it will test.sometimes you just happen to be filling it when this happens.

It happened to me when my fuel level was really low as well. I had to reset.
