Below invoice for an 05 STi?

Well, I went shopping for an '05 STi because I do not like the '06 front end, and the dealer offered the car to me for $196 under invoice (which puts it at $31,700 with the short shifter, auto dim with homelink, wheel locks, security upgrade, blue carpeted mats, and boost gauge). They also offered me the low side of what edmunds.com says my '02 WRX is worth trade wise, which is $13,000. My question is how much more do you think that I can get out of them? I am thinking that since they need to move '05s they should be able to come up with at least another $1000 off of the STi. Am I being unreasonable on this? Any info on recent purchases would be appreciated. Oh, and by the way, every Subaru dealership in my city still has at least one '05 STi sitting on the lot, so they are not exactly scarce yet.

Thanks

Keep in mind it's the last 05 they will have. They won't exactly want to ***** it out that bad.

I would say that is pretty good. Every time I go to a dealership to deal on an STi, they won't budge at all on the price. So I keep going home empty handed. The dealership I went to had six STi's on the lot. I hate the subaru dealership here in Vegas. They try to screw people on the financing. They tried to tell my friend his credit score was way lower than it actually was, which was bull$hit because we had already checked it, before we went there. Unfortunately they are the only subie dealership with in 4 hours. I may never end up getting one, because I refuse to get screwed when buying a car.

I agree with you on refusing to get screwed nahf14. Oh, and by the way, they still have 4 STi's between their 2 locations.

holding out

you're right in thinking that you may be able to do a little better than $200 below invoice, especially if you think they're low on your trade (consider private party sale....??). However, if you're looking at 05 because you don't like the 06's, keep in mind that what you see now is all you've got. Although if you hold out, you may save a few hundred more dollars, you may also get stuck with a color, or accessories that you don't want. If you don't really care about that, then by all means, hold out, but if you're picky about color, you're going to kick yourself in 3 years because you ended up with PSM instead of CGM but saved $200. Trust me.

Well, I talked to the salesman today and I caved a little...I told him he had to save me an extra $800 instead of the $1000 that I thought about originally. I told him this was a deal breaker, take it or leave it. We'll see what happens.

Thanks again for the input.

I would go with their price on the car, and try to negotiate on the trade.

yes, holding out for some cash maybe a good item if stock was plentiful. But the current situation is the 05's are getting eaten up .. and fast. So i'd take my chance with it. It's already a great price. Just my 2 cents.

Well, it has been a month since I started haggling with the dealers on STi prices. I haven't bought one yet, and I'm not sure if I will. But for those of you that are afraid of the '05s going fast...there is still about 8 of them left within 2 hours of where I live. The dealer that I spent the most time negotiating with still has the same 2 STi's sitting on his lot that were there a month ago. I think this must be due to the fact that everyone knows that the '06s are starting to show up at dealerships and nobody wants to pay full price for a car that is effectively a year old depreciation wise. Just because I hate the styling of the '06s, does not mean that I am willing to get hosed on an '05. If I cannot get the deal I am after on the '05, I won't buy it, it's that simple. I will be surprised if the dealer doesn't call me back with a better offer within the next few weeks, especially once they have '06s sitting on their lot.

02wrb, I agree with you about not getting screwed by dealers. You should hold your ground and dont buy at a price you think is unreasonable. Those dealers with those STI's will probably still have those lying about in a few months and will begin to look for your phone number to see if you are still interested. At that point, you can buy it at your price. Basically, it is the dealer's interest to move his cars out of the lot cuz it only costs him money to do so. It kinda sucks that there are only a few dealerships near you. If you lived near the east coast (i am in NY), you could have access to over 30 subaru dealerships within an 80 mile radius. Maybe you should buy your car in the east coast, just a thought.

if you do your research properly you will find out all the incentives, rebates, and possibly "holdback" on the cars- websites like www.kbb.com , www.edmunds.com all reveal the proper pricing information you need.... the info you need to ascertain whether or not a dealer can sell a limited production vehicle below invoice----

any dealer that does that - loses points in my book. especially a car that is only produced in numbers of 4,500 a year.... one thing that really sucks about buying a brand new car below invoice is that it hurts the STi community in general- bringing our resale value down.. but hey! it's a value we are seeking so...

at any rate good luck- and post up your success story later-
