87 octane is SWEET!!!

So I swapped cars with my Mom for the week of Thanksgiving so I could tow my dirt bike to Norcal and ride with my brother, and I told her several times, "she needs premium dude!"(j/k, but you get my point). My mom proceeded to fill up with 87.

I got back in town yesterday, Wednesday, and immediately take my WeRX for a drive, what happens?......its detonating!

I asked her if she filled up with premium and she said,"I'm not paying for that crap."

So is one tank of 87 really that bad? I know she didn't drive hard, but I'm wondering if I need to get my car serviced, I don't think I need to, but I wanted to ask you guru's your opinion. My car had less than 1/4 tank of crappy 87 left in it and I immediately filled up with 91=no more detonation. But I know the damage has been done, what do you guys think?

No, as long as you baby it, the 87 shouldn't mess anything up. If it makes you feel any better, i know someone who had never put anything but 89 in his, drove it hard around Miami for a full year. Today, he has no problems.

It was detonating? Isn't that pretty damn serious or was it just hesitant and pinging?

You're lucky that our ECUs will adjust for the loss of octane but yeah...your mom should NEVER EVER EVER drive your car again.

to my understanding it is the same thing, but i've talked to several people about detonation including a top fuel dragster mechanic guy I know and I still don't have a clear understanding of what detonation really is, I just happen to know what it sounds like.

im a n00b, but the best way I can describe it that lower octane gas 'explodes' to early causing the pinging. Higher octane requires more energy(?) and explodes at a higher temp thus making more powAr. yeah, Im a n00b. someone correct me if need be

Well perhaps I'm wrong...anyways, all I know is that detonation is hella serious.
