5th gear noise?
Hi, my stock '05 wagon has been getting a nice break-in period. This afternoon I went for a long drive at multiple rpms. I started hearing a noise when in 5th gear. It sounded a bit like a constant tone from a cricket. Not chirp chirp chirp, but like one long continuous chirp.
If I accelerated in 4th gear and shifted to 5th, the sound would slowly start to build up. Interestingly, my wife in the passenger seat heard nothing. And if I turned my head 90 degrees it would go away.
4th gear didn't seem to have any issues with this (or any other gear). So is this something to be concerned about or are the aliens trying to contact me via my 5th gear? I'll probably just drive it for a while longer and see how things develop. That's what the warantee is for.

My '02 wagon has always made a slight whine when cruising in fifth. It's not so much a solid cricket noise as it is a high pitched turbine whine. I'm pretty sure my noise is from the turbo.
If I were you, I'd make a mental note of the noise and not worry about it at all unless it changes.

My 02 WRX whines in 3rd, 4rth and 5th, always at about 2700 RPM to 3000 RPM. It is a continuous, constant whine, not a squeak or a chirp. My guess is that it is the turbo spinning up but dumping boost through the wastegate (boost gauge shows vacuum at that RPM unless you are at nearly full throttle).
