2002 WRX Wagon Hatch clunking

The clunking noise in the rear hatch appears to be coming from appears to be the hinges.

If I stuff a shop rag under each hinge and close the hatch the clunking goes away.

The Subaru dealer and the area rep state Subaru does not have a solution to this problem.

Anyone else experience this and more importantly, anyone come up with a solution.

Don't the hatches have those plastic screw in things to adjust for that kind of thing? You know, you twist it a little so it goes in or comes out. Brian

Adjust them all the way up or down makes no difference. Appearantly there's not enough adjustment to push the bottom of the hatch up enough to keep the top from moving.

That's why i belive it's a problem with the hinges not the adjustment of the latch or of the position of the bottom of the hatch.
