2002 WRX w/65k for $15k worth it?

I seen a 2002 WRX for sale with 65k miles on for $15,000. I can probally get the price lower (cash is king). It has a Greddy Type S, TSW wheels and a exhaust (just says exhaust, will have to check it out). It has some black tints and I think cleared out front lamps. Checked out clean in carfax and was driven an approximate 18k miles a year which is a little above the useual 15k a year. The engine looks very clean too. I would want to put on the VF34 package from Gruppe-S and a Cobb Accessport, but I dont want to put alot of power onto the tranny that already has 65k miles on it.. Is this worth it.

i think with any used WRX purchase, the tranny is key. the tranny being the shortcoming of this car, i'd make sure that it hasn't been beat on.

also, you can get some pretty good prices here on i-club.

yeah I know, i'm weary about doing a blind deal sort of thing. O yeah it has a short shifter and carbon dash kit also. How can you tell if the trannys been beat on? Or you just have to take the sellers word that it hasn't been.

^^ Regarding the tranny... test drives tell you a lot... See if the clutch shudders, most likely will a bit.. Pay closer attention to the shift feel... do they engage with a positive feel, or do you find yourself having to force it into gear? Do some extremely slow driving, like 5-10 mph, get in second gear at a VERY low rpm, engage the clutch gently, and drive it till about 4krpm... see if you feel any click or bumps in the gearing... Albiet its not good to keep your hand on the shifter while driving... go for it... because feedback from the shifter will also tell you a bit.. if you feel stutters it can generally indicate that the gears arent in great shape... but thats the best I know as far as diagnosing a tranny short of opening it up... I'm sure there are other methods of finding out if its been abused, but theres my 2 cents!

if you can, test drive a new WRX or one that has a good tranny in it. WRX trannies are a big of a quirk and have their own feel. unless you know what's normal and what's not, even a good WRX tranny will feel like a quirky Honda tranny.

goodluck.

seems like an ok deal. Is the "greddy type s" a blow off valve? I wouldnt buy a used wrx with a bov. Unless it was heavily modified, wrx's dont need bov's, so the owner either a) put it on without knowing that bov's dont increase performance , or b) just wanted the cool sound.

Hrmm, if you are intent on the bug eyes look, then consider looking for an 03 instead. Also, if you are open to the 04-05 style, look around, don't get in too much of a hurry. With the newer WRX out, there are people that are upgrading....You might score a good deal on an 04-05....I got my 04 just this week for 16650...with only 35k miles....A little more expensive than your 02, but I would be willing to bet that you would pay the extra 1600. I know that is an unusual example, but keep your eyes peeled. :-)

Yeah.. still can't believe you bought the car.. I was shocked when I looked on the thread and seen it lol. I was like WHAT! I was going to buy that!. It's not like it was on the forums either it was in a car find search engine lol. How do you go about doing a buy like that? You have someone inspect it and keep the money in an escorw or something like that?

Smile

exactly.

I used SGS automotive inspection services. I received an inspection report. Then I actually had the seller sign a document giving the lienholder limited power of attorney, so they could transfer the title directly to me. I was buying the car for the payoff amount of the loan, which was nice because he wasn't upside down on it or anything. So, after that was confirmed by the bank, I did a direct wire transfer to the lienholder, and the title is now being sent to me. There is a shipping company, not the cheapest, but they do a good job. http://www.dependableautoshippers.com
Anyhow, it is a little work, but the car was a good deal. I guess we will see when it gets here the 6th.... I have that as a guaranteed date. If they take longer, then it starts costing them money. :-P

oh ok thanks, I kinda limited myself to ones in my area so it cut the cars down by about 98%.

Yup, just use Cars.com, and open that search up. There were some good deals on wagons in my area, but that is all that I found recently that was interesting. I almost went the wagon route, but there wasn't really any reason for to go with that :-P a little cheaper....I suppose, but oh well. I can't deny the look of the sedan :-D
