Subaru's are pretty reliable, but it all matters on how the previous owner treated the car. 52k miles isn't much on my mom's Subaru, but 52k could be a lot if the owner is hard on the car.
There is a good chance it'll be fine, but to be on the safe side, I'd have it checked out.

52k
couldn't have said it better than nKoan.
I've got 50K on mine now (man, the miles come fast somehow), and I've had no problems, not even a squeak, but a good number of WRX's, especially 02's, develop transmission issues while still relatively young. Often this is caused by overly agressive driving, racing, clutch drops, and/or heavy mods without reinforcing the clutch and transmission. Most of the time, a well driven and well cared for WRX won't have any problems. I do hear or see occasionally someone who claims to have had transmission issues without having abused their car, but many of those people have quarter mile times in their signatures, so you be your own judge.

My '03 has 43k on it and aside from a problem I had (that was later fixed by a recall) in the beginning, it has been trouble free. The car has yet to leave me stranded or even made me limp it home. Love my WRX and I expect it to last a very long time (unless I buy an STi first...)
i have an 02 with over 58,000 miles on it and i havnt had anyproblems whatsoever, took it to the track last week and ran a 14.160@96.011 and my mods are an airhog, removed silencer, and removed stock cat back exhaust... so if you ask me, it hasnt lost any steps... its gained a few

54K on my 03 WRX Sedan and nothing has needed service other than scheduled maintenance. I'll probably need to have brake discs honed or replaced pretty soon, though.
Everyone here seems to agree... if the cars haven't been run really hard or abused the freeway miles do not mean the car is in need of an overhaul.

To keep things in perspective, my friend cooked a rod bearing at 52k miles. Motor is getting replaced as we speak.
The last ~10k were incredibly hard track and auto-x miles and probably ~45k were fairly hard track/auto-x miles. Ever since he got a daily driver, that WRX hasn't seen one friendly mile (except driving to/from events).
It all depends on the previous owner.
