2000 RS - Pre Warranty Expiry Inspection Comments
I just got my 2000 RS used with 70,000 km and just under a month of warranty left. I am taking the car into a Subaru Dealer tomorrow to have the vehicle completely inspected.
In particular I plan to have the following checked:
-Clutch slave cylinder -> squeak from clutch -> either TO bearing or bumb slave cylinder.
-Head gasket -> check VIN to see if bad head gasket issue applies -> if car is subject to head gasket failure check for additive in coolant.
-Piston slap (is this really common?)
-Timing belt tensioner (again, is this really common?)
Anything else I should have them look at while I'm there?

The slave cylinder squeek is an easy fix- just get a dab of silicon grease in between the pushrod and the clutch lever.
The head gasket coolant additive is seperate from warranty- it was a recall. No problem there, call the dealer with your VIN and they'll tell you.
Piston slap is not something that will be fixed under warranty. If you only hear it when the engine is cold, it's normal.
Haven't heard much about the timing belt tensioner. You're still less than halfway to the replacement interval for the timing belt though.
The only other concern I would have is the clutch judder issue. If you get any, make sure you have the updated parts. The service should be on record with Subaru.

Thanks Dude
My clutch feels fine - I haven't noticed any shuddering, but I will get it looked at. As for the clutch sqeak it seems to be independent of the bracket-slave cylinder interface. I have (and this could be a bad sign) pushed the slave cylinder in by pulling the bracket towards the front of the car. It took a while for the slave cylinder to return to it's normal position and during that time I still heard a squeak. Applying a slight bit of pressure to the bracket (pushing toward the back of the car) clears up the squeak. I know, likely a dying TO bearing, but we'll see what they say after the inspection tomorrow.
A friend of mine repairs and wrecks Subarus for a living. He said that the Timing belt tensioner can be a problem on occaision. He alse mentioned that #4 cylinders can go as well.
Does anyone have any idea of the frequency with which head gaskets fail on these things? I feel like I'm playing Russian Roulet here!

With the 2000 MY engine, you don't have a whole lot to fear for the head gasket. It's the DOHC models that are more prone, and even then you have to overheat it to cause it to be an issue.
