02-03 WRX Shopping
looking to buy an 02-03 WRX with around 30k miles or less and manual Transmission... anyhow i was wondering what should I look out for with a used WRX ? Also i was wondering what it will take to get it to the 300-350 HP mark.. and to get there what kind of money and what kind of parts for money ? like Turbo's , Injectors , pumps , intake , exhaust .. Very new the Subaru's so fill me in =D and also how does this affect the long Term of the car's engine . or is there things you can mod on the motor to prevent these issues if any.. I have looked at a few WRX's already most of them seem to be around $18,$19K with about 30k miles on them manual of course . Do you think i can do better ?
also how do you feel about Trade In's I always felt they were ripping you off .
I currently Own a 95 Ford Taurus SHO w/ 148K on it. probably only worth about $3 in kbb . but u see all of these minmum $3 or $4k Trade in's . i dont think i would ever trade my car in but just checkin for your thoughts of it ...
Thanks for the help,
John

The main thing I would be concerned about when purchasing a used WRX is that the previous owner modified and beat on their car. Other than that, these cars are very reliable and strong and there really aren't any quirks with the '03s. On the '02s you have to watch out for clutch shudder, which is a shaking of the car when it's cold. The issue was addressed as a TSB warranty item by Subaru but some people didn't get the service performed. If you're looking at an '02 it would be a good idea to ask.
As for 300 - 350hp there are multiple methods of getting there. You could go right now to www.gruppe-s.com and get a VF22 (turbo), STi injectors and fuel pump for $1199 or so. Then all you'd need is to pay for install and an ECU reflash (~$600 or so for the reflash) and you should be around 300hp at the crank. My friend has been running that setup for about 20,000 miles now and it's reliable as can be. These engines are very strong, you just have to tune them right and they'll keep working great for you.
Good luck with the purchase - the WRX is a GREAT car.

Do not forget the major issues these cars have with the tranny.
I remember advidly a person saying he's lost three gears with 300whp and being mostly gentle with it. I can't say his driving didn't cause the issues but if you plan to hit the 300whp mark you better beef up that transmission good.
In fact just get an sti tranny and be done with it.
