WRX: "old look" vs "new look"
With the understanding that Subaru is not likely to win any awards for styling for any of their cars, I was just thinking that I prefer the look of my 02 WRX wagon to the new style WRX.
I guess I'm in the minority, because most people really bashed the look of the 02 and 03 "bugeyed" WRXs. I always thought they looked kind of unique, and now they will be more unique than ever since Subaru has already changed the front fascia!
I don't see how this is an improvement, though the car magazines always note in their articles that it is an improvement.
I think the new foglights look tiny and out of proportion, while I already miss the bugeye headlights. The first series of WRX may not have it on the mark in terms of styling, but I don't think they really "improved" anything with the new look either.
Maybe they'll get it right in 06?
Until then, I'll take the bugeyes.

i don't know... at first i hated the bug eyed looks, and just loved the car for the rest of it (everything but the front and the performance). i was thrilled when i saw the new front of the 04's and loved it immediately, seeing it as a huge improvement. but now as i look at the 03's i'm beginning to like it more and more and appreciate its, like you guys said, unique look.
so i guess i like the looks of both. the new one is kinda scaring me cuz they might start looking like "chick cars" the way they're heading. and i consider new bmw 3 series chick cars.

I like the '02-'03 look better as well. It is just more agressive looking. But I have not seen the '04 in real life yet so I won't set my opinion in concrete. I also didn't like the bug eyes at first, but they grew on me and now I own one. So I guess I can't trust my initial reactions at all.
Oh yeah the Fog lights look lame on the '04 imo.

From the side view, I think the '04s look better than the '02-'03s. They got rid of the amber side markers and its a little more sleek looking. From the front and back, I don't think it's really any worse or better. The big improvement to me is the interior. The seats are sportier-looking and don't have any blue in them (I never thought the blue seats belonged in the SRP WRX). Plus the MOMO emblem in the steering wheel and the gauge needles are red, much more sporty. Not to mention the tachometer in the center where it belongs. IMO the '04 is just a little more appealing than the '02-'03s.

Other than the rear tail lights I think they've taken a step backward in all the cosmetic modifications they made. I don't like the curvature to the hood, the bigger hood scoop looks like a limp dorsel fin from the side, the new seats are not nearly as nice as the older seats. I also agree that the fogs are now too small. Also, the new black paint has a nasty brown/green tint to it rather than the old blue, which was sharp. I'm glad I bought an 03.

a few months back i made a poll on this ...if i remember correctly it was 50/50 ...but it wouldnt be like that in any other forum...i personally liked the bugeyes ...sadly most dont...i cant see it as a girl car yet....can u guys?im getting scared now

Interior '04... way better. Tach in the middle is cool. Seats are less fat American. I like the '04 headlights, they may look more mainstream ***, but isn't that better than an almost "Neon" facia? You all just own pre '04's and are jeleous. (Kidding !!!). Mechanically they are the essentially the same, so if you you like the pre '04, then go now, while the deals are really good.
With '04, you can get sunroof, heated seats (in New Hampshire, USA that is good)
Re: the '04 black, it is indeed a bit odd (green and brown flecky) but it is very unique in sunlight. I sort of like it A sort of classy color comparted to the flood of WRB's and drab silvers (way to many of those...). Both yellows were abominations.

i like my 03, im glad they made a new body style, because it makes my car even more rare and different. I think that the bug eyes set it apart which is what i was looking for when i bought the subaru. How many people own a car that looks like mine? maybe 20K to 30K tops. I love it and the looks i get!

I think more people like the old style in these forums because that is what most people own. Everyone in here loves their car and when you see another just like it, usually you'll like that too. I like both however since I have got my new 04 I'm really starting to like the new look better. I just need some bigger fog lights!!

I think more people in these forums like the old style because they just look a lot nicer!
I checked out an '04 in person over the last weekend. The only thing I agree with in the above statement is the hood scoop. It's gone a little too far towards the snow shovel look. I don't like the rear tail lights. I kind of like the funky paint. The cloth they use as seat covers in the new model is leaps and bounds better than the Southwest Airlines crap they put in the '02-'03's. The front lights look marginally better on the new model, although the bug eyes have grown on me...
