what should i get?
hey, im new to iclub, ive been secretly reading posts but i finally decided to join tonight especially since winter vacation starts today.
One thing im really hyped up about is my upcoming 16th birthday, which means i'll be getting my license. i made a driving test appointment on my birthday, itll be so much fun. Ok cool so i get my license, but now what car do i actually get? to give you some background info: My dream car of course would be a MarkIV TT6spd supra. yea right. then ive been a subaru fan for yrs and i am extremely excited about the STi coming mid next year but of course insurance will kill me.
So anyway, what i really watned to know was, knowing that i am a 16yr old male living in so cali, what car do you guys suggest me getting becuase any pure bred sports car equals slave work to pay off insurance money. just wanted some input, thanks

this is a serious reply! consider buying an older (ea71, ea81, ea82) subaru! they are serious fun and dirt cheap. they are simple enough that anyone can work on them, and they will last forever. i have been driving a 1980 ea71 hatch for 7 years and am in the process of replacing it with a 1980 ea81 hatch. these cars go anywhere and you can lift them with a back yard boys lift kit to make it an off road vehicle. i also love loyales. look around and see what is out there before you buy anything. ask yourself what you really want. if you want to be able to off-road, and you don't have a whole lot of $$ for upkeep, buy an older suby.
p.s. hows about a brat?

hey, thanks for the suggestions but i wouldn't go for something that old school, I think those cars are older then my dad...
thanks alot for all the info though suckerking
Hm, i was just wondering what input i would get, i am leaning towards the 97-01 model imprezas. yea its a bit pricey but ive always loved that car. btw is it true that they only have RS for those models? ive been hoping i could find a wrx or somethign more performance based in the states

Unless you are a horrible driver and can't drive a stick worth crap, I'd recommend getting a niced used WRX wagon. You'll be going to college soon and you can use the extra space. Also, the WRX will have the performance you need. I've seen some nice used WRX's around $17k-19k. That may be a little on the expensive side, especially for a 16 yr old, but that's what I recommend.
I hope it wont be spoiling you though.

A clean '98 on RS would be a great choice. i am not sure what insuarance category they fall into though, and if it differs from 2dr to 4. the 2 dr is much better looking in my opinion, sooo much style. and they drive awsome. adding a bigger rear sway bar, and some better shocks/springs goes long way in that chassis.
i had to laugh at sucker kings comment, mostly b/c i did drive a 92 loyale for a couple years. and yes you can beat on them and go a lot of places with them (don't get me started on what we used to do with them at the garage i worked at. 5 acres of junk yard, as many loyale and parts as you need, a lift and mig welder, 'nough said!!!). however they have a few problems. they rust out. nothing you can do about it. maybe not so much in CA, but in ME they are all coming off the road due to rust. they also have a bad oil leak prob, and need to have timing tightened or replaced every 30k or so.
in the long run get something newer. if it can't be an RS, look for an older Impreza 2dr w/ a 2.2. not quite as cool, but still awd and a subaru.

yup, as of right now, i have my eyes on a 98 2.5RS but im also quite tempted to beg/plead my parents to help me out on a 02/03 RS, used of course, but i have alot of questions about how they drive/hande/and stack up on performace compared with each other. so if you have any info on the difference between the older RS and the newer ones it would help alot in making my decision
thanks
btw, my dreams really got shattered when i found out the reality of settling for an RS instead of the rex =( so if i get the 98RS maybe ill have some more dough to burn on trying to reach up to where the rex is performance wise but it still wont bring me the rex... ::sniff::

There are not any major differences w/ with the new RS and the older. '98 still had a quad cam setup like the WRX has today. 99 they went to the twin cams. the new style RS only comes in a 4 dr. and has no hood scoop. i think one of the best looking models is either an 00 or '01 2 dr. they have the nice rectangular lights, w/ the fog lamps as well. as far performance goes, not mush difference. i know the older 2.5 has about 125hp. no subaru claims to be getting around 160 in the new 2.5. does anybody else know about this?? i have read the subaru manual on the 98 an older 2.5 and it was put at 125. so there is some hp diff. the new style has a chassis difference in the front. the frames are all a uni-body, but all the new imps. have a subframe attached to the main rails in the front. if it was my car i would be looking for a 99-01 rs. 2dr or 4dr there is no difference, just looks.
hope you find one.

Well good news or bad news came along depending on how you look at it. I actually persuaded my parents into getting me a *NEW* WRX. Yeah, I know, 'wow' but the thing is, I would totally go crazily happy with my parents but I have fallen in love with the STi coming out which will make me have to dish out almost $10k more. Is the $10k extra really worth it? I know the answer is probably yes, but damn, getting a little spoiled.
Yeah, I was looking at used RS's 98-02 all week, and found no good deals, everyone as paying more then the value and asking for too much so I didn't bother and ended up going for a new one when we found out the dealers in our area don't carry them. So now we're looking at the WRX.
Sti or WRX?
BTW, I received an insurance quote for Impreza, 350Z, M3, and Supra. The Impreza dialed in at roughly 100$ a month, I assume all Imprezas are at that rate but the WRX has turbo so I'm not really sure if my insurance guy was aware of that o_O.
