I usually do about 30 seconds, and it indeed helps. But say 2+ minutes makes it feel like a different car, especially on a cold winter morning. Shifts and drives so much nicer.

Car: 04 WRX, stock motor and transmission, 137K mi.

 

Yeahh i can agree with you. Usually if i take off without warming it drives kinda slower and shifts kinda wierd. Although a couple min warming up drives like a champ. Thats a good read

I usually start it up, let it idle for a minute or so and get going. I'll drive it easy, keeping shifts around or below 3k and not going into boost. Once I see the oil temp rising on my Defi oil temp gauge, that's when I'll start going into boost or driving a little harder

Oil definitely takes a bit longer to warm up compared to coolant

 

I warm up all my cars. I always wait till idle drops and gets close to/or normal idle

Hmm that's interesting... I always let my car warm up for a minute or two before driving on cold starts, and stay out of boost until the oil is fully warmed

 

Good to know when I get back into a Subaru. I used to always let the temp gauge hit the bottom line at least before driving the car (usually around 2-3 minutes if I remember correctly), but I felt the car felt like it pulled harder when it wasn't fully warmed up (I only did this a few times). Maybe it's just me.

 

For the longest time, I didn't get why it drove great some of the time and others it made me feel like I needed a new transmission/I hate this car/I thought I changed the oil/why can't I shift right/grr blah.

Bit of warming, or if it's been in the sun already (ie: at least the front end w/the engine), and it's good to go.

Best yet though is when I've been driving that day for a while (errands, commute home), and I take it out later that night. The core's still warm, but the air's nice and cool. A cold, high humidity (but less than raining) night is ideal.
