Thin Paint on my Subie.
I am an old, old, fart and have owned many cars in my day. From an Opel to large American "muscle" to *** cars to German cars, I have owned them all.
I have never had a car with such thin paint as my 04 Subie, if you look at this thing funny you give it a scratch right down to the white prime coat.
Is this a common thing with Subies?

Subaru knew that cars would go to thinner paint in the future, so they were simply setting the standard by going with thin, crappy paint a long time ago.

My paint is in horrible condition, and I am looking at a big-time paint shop bill soon as I am starting to get rust on the A-pillar and fenders

I've got a MBP '03 WRX Sedan and yes, the paint is thinner than on any car I've owned. If Subaru likes to keep the weight down on their cars for cost, speed and gas mileage then I guess this is one of the ways they do it. Gravel roads must be murder on the paint.
Because it's a black car I probably do a lot of washing and waxing. I'll hand wash every 3 weeks to a month and wax twice a year. The paint still looks very sharp, but I live in a mild CA climate and have a garage. It's parked outside all day at work though and during much of the weekend. I've got a few chips out of the front end, but nothing unusual for 50k. The subie paint does require extra protection so I wax a couple of times a year and wash with Blue Coral Concentrated Car wash, which leaves a glossy, beading, protective polymer coating on the car. It does good job protecting paint and plastic.

I have a blue WRX that I use for ski trips to Tahoe + autocrossing. It has 65k miles on it. The paintwork resembles the evening/night sky - blue with lots of white specks.
I think its a combination of two problems: thin paint, and that they use a white undercoat to get that bright blue. My guess is that the dark colours will look a lot better when they get older.

I'm irritated about the condition of my paint as well, I notice a new sctatch almost every time I wash it.

Mine flakes off easy on the front bumper, anything pretty much plastic.. the metal holds a little better.. maybe it's just me?
