SVT vs STi in HR Magazine
I know someone brought this up before but I finally saw the Article in Hot Rod magazine. I didnt read the whole thing I just read the conclusion portion of the article.
It says:
We could not come up with a winner because all the judges were undicided. The STi off the line has the advantage with its AWD system and beats the SVT by .01 secs. The STi is much quicker than the SVT, faster, Cheaper, and more fun to drive (yet they still say its a draw). All in all we love both cars.
That wasnt verbatum but you get the idea. HR did want to say that the STi would smoke the SVT hands down at the track and have some $ to spare so they call it a draw. Such BS on HR's part not giving it up to the True winner.
 Yeah Baby! Yeah!

The Mustang was the Cobra model - Ford doesn't refer to this particular Mustang as the SVT.
That issue of Hot Rod Magazine was a good one. If you read the editorial letters, you would have witnessed Hot Rod's editors telling readers that it would be great to build dragsters using import 4-bangers like the Subaru flat four. For the past year, Hot Rod has gone on record stating that 4-cylinder cars and imports warrant space in their magazine, much to the dismay of some (not all) of their readership base. They've taken a lot of heat, both via e-mail and written letters, from readers who feel that imports have no place in Hot Rod Magazine. They've stated their position and don't appear to be willing to turn back the clock now.
There was also a feature article on a drag race DSM car, a '91 Eagle Talon, which has turned an 8.76 @ 165+ mph in the 1/4-mile. Granted, not all Subaru enthusiasts are drag racing fans but it's Hot Rod's way of showing their readership that imports can make big power and hold their own against the traditional musclecar. Note that their shootout between the STi and the Cobra used both 1/4-mile testing and road course lap times for a more well-rounded comparison.
I think Hot Rod Magazine should be commended for taking that leap to bring the import car into the definition of the phrase Hot Rod. By doing so, it may help to alter Detroit's view of what the people want in a performance car.

I must agree with wingless. As a new WRX owner I love my car. But as a car buff in general I also hold a fondness for large displacement V8 cars also. You can't beat the sound or torque of a V8. However I still can't help but smile when most of those snarling V8, rear wheel drive cars run for cover at the sight of foul weather. Meanwhile the wrx, my little red hotrod is still begging to go out and play.
Hot Rod must be commended for putting imports into their magazine. That's a huge gamble for a magazine who's readers tend to be more concerned with Holly carbs than all wheel drive or turbochargers. As someone who has a very widespread taste in cars I have been known to read almost every auto mag out there including Hot Rod from time to time. When I first saw the STi vs the Cobra my judgement was that the magazine would probably put any spin on the article to show that big bore cars from Detroit are still the only way to go. But the fact that they declare a tie is very fair by me. Yes both cars may run fairly close but they get to the end result in very different ways. Its a great world to me where a person can pick between two cars which are polar opposites and still have a wonderful fast car.

I've never read an issue of HR Mag, but from what I've read on this post, I will have to give them a thumbs up. IMHO, they went out on a limb showing that imports can hold their own. I may not be happy with a "draw," but it's a huge step for them and I guess they didn't want their subscribers to feel alienated. If they keep this up, those of us who drive modded imports will eventually get a little more respect from the "old school" folks.
