Should I replace my timing belt?

Hi:

I have a 2002WRX with very few engine mods, only cat-less up and down pipes and a Borla cat back. This has become my second car and mainly only gets driven on the weekends. I take good care of her.

I only have 55,000 miles on it and just brought it into a family friend mechanic (who I trust) for a minor tune up. He said I need to replace most belts, including power steering, etc. and a tensioner. This seems normal to me on a 8 year old car that has never had them replaced.

My Question: He is concerned, that, with the condition of these belts there might be an issue with the timing belt! Just to check it would cost $5-700 and to replace it, including water pump etc. is around $1,000!

Is it really necessary to replace a timing belt with 55k miles? I know it sits a bit and is a 2002, but I would think mileage would be much more important than time????

Any recommendations or advise would be appreciated!

With the damage that can take place if it goes bad, if in doubt, better off doing it then not.

A friend is charging 500 dollars just to inspect the t belt!?!
Time for a new friend.
BTW....there's both a mileage AND time requirement on t belt replacement.
