I think the sedan looks nicer with the fender flares. I agree that the wagon is more practical in most situations though.
Another thing to think about is if you've got 2 child car seats in the back like I do, the sedan actually may give you more room because of the way the child seat teathers attach onto the rear of the wagon's trunk (in the sedan they don't take any trunk space because they attach onto the rear deck).

Depends on what you need. Personally, I don't think I'd ever go with a sedan(as opposed to a car that is a wagon or hatch/notchback) until I own a home that i plan on staying in for a while. While I was in college, I had my trusty 93 Escort Wagon. You'd be amazed at how much crap I could stuff in there. Between my escort and a rental van, I could fit a futon, 27" TV, complete 5.1 home theater setup, computer, etc.
When I was shopping around, I figured I definately wanted a wagon/hatcback if for nor other reason than the larger cargo opening. While some sedans have massive trunks, that doesn't do you much good if the item in question is too big to fit into the trunks opening.
I ended up getting a 2004 OBS (couldn't afford the insurance or gas prices for a WRX). I'm really happy with it. Since I plan on keeping the car for a few years, it may come in handy to have the wagon instead of a coupe/sedan.

Sedan...faster and those flares are AWESOME. Only get the wagon if you REALLY need it and need it often.

Wagon for sure:
Nothing is better than sliding sideways at 70mph coming off an off-ramp passing a soccer mom in her volvo who is doing 35! LOL, do it almost every day, and I'm doing it in a station wagon!

you cant argue that the sedan isnt faster. Facts dont lie. now is there a certain fun aspect about doing something unexpected in a wagon, yes, but it is not as fast and it has no flares.

I've struggled with this also; in fact, I still am.
I maybe need the wagon's utility a handful of times a year, but it sure would be nice to have when I need it.
On the other hand, I find the wrx wagon less than desirable. The back end is 70's Pacer, the narrower front without fender flares makes the scoop look goofy-big.
The sedan is mean looking; in black it's gangsta! I'm not a fan of rear wings, but the combo of scoop in front/wing in back, with flares on the side....man, that's ALL business! But inside, it's cramped feeling to me, and the seatbacks don't even fold down! What is that?
Just my .02............................................... ..... =)

see me now... and hear me later....
Yeah, I just like the sedans looks better, as much as I want the wagon. Plus the wagon's cheaper! Also, as was mentioned before, insurance rates can be different. Bad enough it needs premium gas, but sports-car insurance rates in addition make the wrx a bit costly.
