SCC mag WRX mods

A few weeks ago I picked up the latest SCC magazine that featured a quick write up on the yellow Evo and also the Project WRX. In the article, the author mentioned the car was showing signs of age, notably, it was mentioned the engine was down 10hp or so from similarly modified cars. I am wondering why the decision was made to crank the engine for more boost and hp then? Didn't they perform a leakdown first to ensure the motor was worthy and capable of upgrades? Like I mentioned in my other post, I'm new to Subarus, but in my experience wih modifying VW engines for more hp (2.2 liter naturally aspirated making 213hp on street), it is always wise to keep valve job in shape, along with ring-to-cylinder wall seal.

Is this done in the WRX world?

I bought my sedan after considering the Ford SVT Focus and VW Golf VR6. I had picked up the Automobile magazine issue that was spouiting off about the Automobile of the Year (silver WRX with BBS') and was lured by the car's performance and specification. My wife and I test drove the VR6 Golf and I was hesitant. It felt old and soft and slow. We took a quick trip to a local Subaru dealer one night after work and all the slaes reps were really busy. I was able to ask one for a manual trans model WRX to test drive. He said 'sure', and brought a gleaming white sedan to the curb. I was struck by the potent thrumming of the motor, as it busily idled, warming up. We strapped in and the sales rep waved us off. I got about two blocks away and openend the throttle in 2nd and was blown away. Compared to the Golf, the WRX was a monster. Before I looked down, we were doing 75+ in a residential.
Needless to say, the following weekend I bought a WR blue sedan (back Jan 02). Aside from a few minor rattles in the dash trim, I have had only the clutch shudder problem infrequently at that. I've put about 22K miles on it (daily commuter) and have only praise for the car.

Is there any WRX-related clubs in the Oakland, CA area??

thanks again,
