Off-road anyone?
So I was just wondering because you don't hear a lot of talk about it, but how many of you Impreza owners take your cars off- road? I know when I get my WRX, after breaking it in, I'm testing it off-road. Are the stock tires that come with the WRX competant enough to take off-road?

ive taken my car out in the winter off-road, on snomobile trails. in the summer i hit a sand pit with it, went with a jeep on 31s. i went everywhere the jeep did, not all that challenging, but i was still impressed. it is very competant off-road with stock re-92's. i cant imagine what its gonna be like this winter with some blizzaks. ill post a pic if i can find one. i took some of the times i got stuck.

i have gone off-roading so many times in my wrx, always done very well also. been through muddy water up to 3 feet deep and quite a bit of snow. the worst was one snow trip that last about 8 hours, should have been an hour and a half, but the snow we were driving on was a few inches of ice then sugar snow under it. so if you broke through your chassis was sitting on a giant piece of ice and we had to dig out everything plus about 15 feet in front of us to get the speed to get going again. oh yeah and we got stuck 3 times that night.

Got REAL crazy on a beach today, dune hopping and that sorta thing, even did my own version of a barrel around some stakes in the ground. Pics to come. I bought my WRX to get dirty.

You do know about the whole "rally-bred" Subaru tradition right? If you go to pretty much any rally or rally-cross these days almost all you see are subies

I'm in an Outback, so I'm a little higher off the ground than you guys. I've had a lot of fun in many places off road so far, and I anticipate more.
Two cautions - first, beware scratches from brush, your car can go many places but may not come back looking the same. My 98 does not have swing-away mirrors, and I've already shaved one off on a pine tree.
Second, good cornering and good crawling are at opposite ends of the compromise spectrum. You'd have a much better log hopper if you had no sway bars to fight the free movement of each wheel. But we have road cars.
I absolutely love a gravel road in my OB, and we have a lot of them here in Ohio.
Plus the occasional cobblestone riverbed

how poorly would a subaru impreza handle with no rear swaybar? i was thinking of taking out my whiteline this winter and replacing it with the stock 2mm piece i also looked at the high lift springs they sell. $360 for 2" suspension lift, but it also reduces drop travel of the wheel a lot. wondering how bad that would be for off-road

my 95L came from factory with no rear bar. If you take it off and run it on the road be prepared for massive understeer and body roll. Cant take turns near as fast

Coil Over Springs?
I have a 98L, I was looking into upgrading the suspension to a coilover from Spomotors. Then a friends suggested simply adding a front strut tower brace, and a high performance sway bar in the back, I don't know the most about suspension so any insight to the advantages and disadvantages to each would be great. Thanks. By the way I took my Impreza everyowhere through the blizzard this past winter, as I laughed at all my friends in their pretty SUVs that couldn't make it anywhere with primary RWD, I LOVE AWD. My only problem is that I would climb atop the snow and if I didn't go fast enough I would bottom out and make a hell of a show throwing snow around. (One reason I want a better suspension)

However, I'm now in love with my Goodrich KWDS tires - reinforced sidewalls, much better traction, largest sipes legal for the stock SS4/PGT classes, and they stay on the wheel - even after a long day of Rally Cross + fun runs!
Let's get down to it!
