Honestly I've heard conflicting opinions on the effects of not properly breaking in the motor.

I romped on mine pretty hard within the first 100 or 200 miles, then took it easy for the rest. My car has 8700 miles on it now, and aside from the semi sized dent in the front of my car, it runs great!

And whats with all the automatics lately? Doesn't the '04 come with a 5speed ?

It is different on automatic and manual transmissions. There is no way that you can stay below 4000 all the time during acceleration cuz it would take too damn long. As far as I'm concerned, it is fine to go above 4000 as long as it's not something you do to like race somebody. Do it when necessary cuz there's no other way round it in an automatic. Just give the car as much love as you can and it'll love u back.

Well, you can drive under 3k RPM - I know 'cos I do it when I'm just pootling around and I don't wanna kick the turbo in - but I wouldn't worry about revving it a bit. 'Course I wouldn't advise racing or redlining it either.

Mostly I avoided gunning the engine and made sure I didn't drive at one speed for long periods for the first 1,000 or so.

Just don't race the car, or stay above 5 grand for very long. The reason they want you to take it easy is because all of the metal is just being run so there is metal in the oil for the first few times you change your oil. in the long shot it will help with engine life. Good Luck

is breaking in really a big deal? to me the whole concept of a break in period seems pointless. because your going to drive it soft and then when you hit the miles then you can drive it hard. Someone posted something that the computer starts to read how you drive the car and then all the sudden you drive it different it will screw with gas mileage and stuff? Now im just wondering, i dont have a turbo car mine is only an rs but this is something i have asked dealerships about when looking for my next car. Sorry for the long post.

The reason they said that is cuz of the way the car learns to the way you drive. There might be some truth to what the person says bout the gas mileage but the car always is learning depending on how you drive it. If you drive it hard after the break-in period, the computer will def need some time to adjust to your own driving style. After that, it'll just be like normal.

And like WRX RUSH said, it's cuz of the metal in the oil...cuz it hasn't been driven. Break-in periods aren't just one of those car myths.
