If you have OEM axles still on the car I would just get a new boot.

if its been torn for a while and grease has spewed up your firewall, replace entire half shaft. If it is recently torn and not many miles put on the car since the tear, replace boot and repack with grease and you are good to go!

If it is clicking when you turn you have no choice but to replace it. If it is not clicking, you can get away with a boot. The downside is, the labor is practically the same either way.

+1 might as well pick up a set of re man'ed halfs shafts and call it a day.

I just recently learned that NON-Subaru remans often dont come with the little metal cup that fits over the seal in the transmission or rear diff.

This is what an OEM axle looks like barely pulled out. Notice the blackish metal "cup":

Had I known I would have either tried to remove the old ones without damage or I would have sourced a set that had that metal cup. The legacy will see quite a bit of gravel/dirt roads so I might be replacing the axles sooner than if I went with ones that had cover the seal.

I just found out the hard way that as far as I can tell, they no longer sell OEM remans of these particular axles. My FXT uses the same axle and I just had to replace it. So it is new or aftermarket.

D'oh, forgot it was a wagon. FXT uses sedan axles. They should sell OEM remans for the wagon because I replaced 3 of the 4 on my wagon.
