I wouldn't buy a mitsubishi regardless of the model. I can handle rattles from interior pieces, loud tires, heatshields, etc... I can't handle throw-out bearing noises, crappy dealer service/ warranty voiding and the fear that my $30K car may be a vehicle without a parent company in a few years.
I think everyone will have to wait to see how the Evo and STI USDM models evolve through the next three years. Right now, the EVO seems to be going more toward performance with a steeper price increase for that performance in the MR. The STI seems to be going more toward a compromise between performance and luxury but with some very meaningful performance upgrades like a new front diff and such.
The next two years will tell a lot about the cars in general. For reference, I'm looking at the USDM impreza line which consistently improved year after year until it became as bulletproof and popular as it is today. I really don't know of a reference in Mitsubishi models. The early gen Eclipse guys don't think much of the latest model. If anything, I think they would agree, Mitsu went backwards on that car.

Why would you need the IC sprayer in the winter? My intercooler is luke-warm even after hard driving and that was in -2C.
Just keep your IC water tank less than 1/2 full and it shouldn't crack.

Tranny sucks
I think I may the only one ever to have this problem. My tranny died after about 4 months. I was downshifting from 6th to 5th and I heard a small chirp, not the rev limit warning, and when I tried to shift back into 6th it wouldn't go into gear. In fact, it wouldn't go into any gear. So I tried turning it off and on, no dice. Called the subaru towing. Realized that it goes in gear when turned off, so tried to start it in gear and the car lurched forward as if I didn't have the clutch in. Did it again, and it lurched then turned over and walah! The car went into gear and I cancelled the tow and drove it to the dealer. The dealer said there is nothing wrong with the tranny. So after a few weeks I hear a grinding when I shifted from 3rd to 4th at high revs. Subaru will not send a new tranny so plan on driving a rental for a month while they send it back, they fix it, and it comes back. That happened twice. I wrote several letters to Mr Saito and they put in a new transmission. Now I hear a noise similar to a bearing noise that is not fixable and the shifter rattles loudly in 5th and 6th. That letter paid off since they are going to reimburse me two car payments, at $650.00 a payment! I am planning on putting in a short throw to see if the stick issues go away. I hear the STi tranny is like glass and I am here to back that up. I pray that this new tranny doesn't have issues like my factory one did. Other than that, I love the car. It's the fastest car I've ever had, I only wish I beat them damn corvettes on the free way. I totally agree with the statement about dealerships bs, but the warranty rocks, and it better since the car is barely a year old now.
