You should ask some of the guys stationed there with you who have bought cars what the procedures are. I think you can apply and get an International driver's license in Japan, but since you're in the military it might not be needed. As long as you have your U.S driver's license and your military ID on you (which you always have anyways) then you should be able to drive.
As for getting a car, any of the major used car lots such as Gulliver, etc will have Imprezas there. All in decent shape too, people in Japan take good care of their cars. An Impreza is a good choice, you can get a Ver.5 or Ver.6 WRX or STi pretty cheap over there. My friend over there who's a Marine just got a Ver.5 STi for like $7500. He sold his R.32 GT-R cuz according to him it was a "piece of ****". Had alot of MAF and electrical problems. Stick with a Suby. Good luck.

Yeah, the price might not be that high for purchasing a Japanese car, but I think you want to check how much it costs to maintain one? (I heard that it costs you an arm and a leg to pay for gas, govermental fees, parking...etc) I might be wrong though......

navion where are you headed?? I am stationed in Misawa and there are plenty of places to get cars. Unfortunately Ver 5 and 6s are alot more expensive up here so must of us have Ver 2s.
Getting a licenses over here is the standard 1~2 hour military training class and then a small written test. As long as you have your US licenses you will be good.
ANy other information you need hit me up and I will help you out!!!
