legacy all-wheel-drive?
I'm looking at a local classified ad for a 1991 Legacy LS wagon. It says it's loaded, has aluminum rims, automatic. What are the chances this is an All Wheel Drive model? If it's not, how easy is it to swap running gear in from an all wheel drive donor car? Is a swap to 5 spd manual difficult? I'm thinking I should just hold out for a factory all wheel drive model, but this thing is really cheap - $2200 Canadian, safetied and emissions tested. The ad doesn's say what engine it's running - any guesses? What should I hope for/avoid? Are there suppliers for suspension & engine upgrades for this model?
I know this is 3 or 4 posts in one, but if anyone has any info, I'd really appreciate your advice.
Thanks!

I used to have a 1991 Legacy L manual. It was a great car and it was great through high school. The LS has either front or AWD, moon roof and ABS. It has a 2.2 liter opposed 4 and comes in manual and auto (courtesy of Kelly Blue Book). The car sounds like an awesome deal but make sure you test drive it thoroughly. Make sure that it cold starts and idles well because I had to fix those problems in mine. As far as upgrades go you might be able to get some new stuff specifically for that year like an intake and some other odds and ends but other then that you'll have to do everything off of factory measurements and trial and error. Converting it from auto to manual could be every ticking from what I've seen of the wiring and mechanical diagrams. If you really want a manual that bad you should probably just wait for one. On a side note that year they also made a sports sedan with a turbo. CAUTION: Subaru turbo engines weren't always as reliable as they are today.
