info on buying car?

hey guys,

I was just wondering if i could get some input from you guys on what you have done in the past with regards to purchasing a used car :

1. Which do you think is better to purchase from private dealer or dealership?

2. Are there any advantages and disadvantages to the two?

3. Do you have a diagnostic run on the car prior to purchasing it or should test driving it be sufficient?

And any other info or advice you have would be much appreciated...thanks everyone

You can get a better deal from an individual, but do your homework first:

I prefer to purchase from a private seller. They are generally more aware of the vehicles history.

1. Usually get a better deal from a private seller. I think it's easier to bargain down the price as well. Also the deal is more clean cut - the seller can't really try build profit in to his sale with an extended warranty or higher interest BS like a dealer may try.

2. The seller should know more about the car and have a better service history than the dealer.

ALWAYS have a diag run on the car. I usually prefer to first drive the vehicle, then play with all the buttons to make sure they work (pop the trunk, the gas, the hood, play with the radio and doors (locks/windows) sunroof, if equipped, etc). Then have the dealer (or a mechanic you TRUST and have worked with) and have a pre-buy inspection done. Usually runs around $100. Also make sure you run a carfax on the vehicle.

In my opinion, this method is your best chance for buying a used car with confidence. Don't skimp on any of the steps and never be afraid to ask questions. Once the sale is made it's a ***** to get your money back and you could be screwed. Also don't let the seller rush you or make you feel uncomfortable. There's always more cars out there if the one you're looking at doesn't work out.

Oh, and make sure you get a bill of sale for the vehicle with that persons signature and the price paid for the vehicle. This gives you more proof of the purchase and some details in case you need to take legal action against the seller at all. You should turn up some good examples in a search.

EDIT: Also read up about the car online - use autos.msn.com, edmunds or forums for that type of car. Current owners and enthusiasts for the model you're interested in can give you an excellent idea of things to watch for. The more you know about the car the less chance you have of being taken advantage of by a seller.

Get a Certified Pre-Owned imho it is the safest bet, used car dealers are notoriously shady
