Question Hot Rod Mag

I watched the show yesterday and came away with a very unclear pisture of what they were trying to say. The two dorks kept alluding to the fun of the mustang yet seem to enjoy the STI more. After iceing the intercoolers they said they had the same 1/4 mile numbers but seemed never to mention that it was a supercharged 8 vs. a turbo charged 4. On the track they kept saying that the mustang was a better car, but then threw in the obligatory, we really don't have much exp. driveing an all wheel drive car. Well duh! give the STI to someone who has the skilz and I'm thinkn' the STI is killing the stang. It's kinda like they didn't want to admitt the subaru is a geniune street contender. Im thinking the guys at Hot Rod Mag are faced with a descision, include imports and do more testing like this ,STI vs. mustang, or keep blowing off the import market and keep their readers wondering why they keep getting the doors blown off their V8's buy these New Monsters of The Roadways.

I have the mag also, it seems like they admit that the sti is faster all around and performed better. But I think since its a "Hot Rod" mag they can't let there muscle car loose to an import with half the cylinders. The only thing they seemed to mention in the mustangs favor was that it gets .5 more miles per gallon compared to the sti.

i watched the show as well, to me it seemed that they declared the sti an overall better car and that they consider it a modern day muscle car. they were just unsure about a lot of things cause as mentioned above, they didn't really know how to drive it and they admitted that. they said that given an experienced driver of subarus and the sti would easily beat the mustang on the road course. i also like how they said that this issue will probably make a lot of subscribers upset since there will be a subaru on the cover, but they don't care, cause they feel like it should be there

My subscription to Hot Rod ran out in December 2003 but I picked up the January issue when I heard about their 'shootout'.

It's a decent article but while the results speak for themselves, I think the editors wrote the piece in such a way to play up the STi's strengths but without completely turning off the musclecar devotees. It really is a good comparison on paper and it never occurred to me that the two should be compared heads-up - 1/4-mile, road course, and price.

The January issue also has two very good tech articles on horsepower and torque, and selecting turbochargers for high-performance street use (though mainly for V8s). It's worth buying this one off the newstand, IMO.
