There are removable reinforcement bars located throughout the New Age Impreza. They exist for both safety and chassis stiffening. This is why you don't remove them to save weight if you drive with anything less than a welded-in full roll cage.

I went and looked at that car last night and its way worse in person. there was a little "shell" of safety right around the drivers seat, it was kinda wierd how just that part of the car was left ok. If there woudlve been a passenger in the car they would have died. O and the rear deck lid was pushed all the way up against the headrest of the drivers seat. It's crazy looking.
