I am at 823 miles in my break in period. Question is once I hit the 1000 mark how do I drive the car? Do I continue to drive it to 4k rpm then shift? Or can I go higher? If I go higher how much higher? Do I always go to the red line then shift into the next gear or is that bad? For normal driving every day what would you say the best points to shift at as far as rpms go?
Should I change the oil now once I hit the 1000 mile mark or change any other fluids? Or should I wait till the 3000 mark that is on a sticker on the top of my windshield?
EDIT: 917 miles now :-)
Thanks :-)

when it hits 1000 miles, redline it through all the gears (maybe not 5th though)
thats what i did
after that drive it how ever you want. feel free to rev it up to 7000rpm whenever you want, i probably do it 2 or 3 times a day other than that i usually shift somewhere from 3500 to 4500 rpm when i am just driving around

wrx ish,
Cool thank you :-) When you red line it does that destroy the engine? I have never owned a stick before... When ever I get up to about 4k rpm right before I shift, it sounds like the engine is really working hard... get's that high pitch noise.. is that normal?
Or is that just how the stock exhaust sounds?
Also, should I change the oil? If so to what brand, Moble 1?
Thanks again,

I wouldn't go around redlining your car everywhere you go, but there are tons of mixed feelings on how to break in an engine. When my dad and I have installed engines in older cars(65 dodge dart gt) we always break them in pretty rough. Speed up to high rpm(like 60 in second) and then let the engine slow us down. I don't think one way or another is better. But I think you can drive it however you want. If you drive slow chances are it will last a little longer. If you drive it hard chances are you might break stuff. I think it comes down to what you want out of your car. Also the redline was set for a reason, if you go too high above redline the fuel gets cut to the engine via the ecu, so you really have nothing to worry about there.

hmm...
you just drive it normall. if u want some more HP...then just drive it higher in the power band. if u dont need as much hp...then just shift as soon as you can. i shift at 3k on the street to save gas. when u drive an automatic car...does the car shift at redline all teh time? no! unless you floor it.. but when u do that...the transmission knows u want to go fast and we will all the way to redline. just use the idea of how the engine reacts in a autoatic car with ur manual car. the only difference is u shift the gears.

Its basically a toss up what you want to do after you break your car in. First thing I would do is to change the oil. It isn't very necessary but alot of people I know with WRX's have. Either go with regular dino oil or flush to synthetic. I didn't change my oil until 3,000 miles though and I went with dino. I flushed to synthetic at 6,000.
Im a firm believer in waiting until you hit 3k miles before changing the oil. Here is why: Modern oils resist break down much better. They already run the engines through some break in at the factory and get rid of a lot if not all the metal shavings that people worry about. They would say to change it early if it was really detramental to the engine. And ive never seen any proof of the benifits of changing the oil after the first 1k miles. As far as switching to syntetic I think its a very good idea but would wait a while. Dino oil has a lot of minerals, chemicals, whatever, that helps your engine break in at the begining of it's life. Wait until at least 6k before switching, but I am personally waiting until about 10k. And as far as shifting, the stock turbo starts to run out of breath around 6500-6800 rpms, so that seems like the ideal shift point if you want to have some fun with the car.

just some food for thought. my dad is in the oil business and i asked him when should i do my first oil change and when should i sdwitch to mobile 1. i told him that i was waiting because the stock oil had minerals and other stuff to help break in the engine. he told me that 1. when was it ever good to have anything in your oil. and 2. manufactures put the cheapest oil they can get into your car. it all comes down to dollers and cents. if one oil company offers a better price then the other the manufacturer usually goes with the cheaper of the bunch.
i will be waiting til 6k to do my first oil change. and 10k til i switch to mobile 1.
and remember when engines come with a short breakin period from the factory. 1k miles is long time for breakin periods nowdays.
