Gas mileage??
Hello everyone, My name is shawn and i am 17 years old and looking into buying a subaru wrx. I will be be saving up my money and putting a large down payment on the car by mid summer (not sure wut car yet). my questions are about gas mileage because i live far from my school and will be doing about 20,000 kms a year(i live in canada).
Since the car starts to boost around 3000 rpm will i be able to save money on gas by shifting before that point, thus not letting boost build up and wasteing gas?
If i install a boost controller with a high boost and low boost setting, will i save gas by kepping it on low boost, then when i need to use the boost set it to max boost and fly away.
the reason im looking into this car is:
1) AWD in winter conditions
2)Power when its needed
3)sporty
4)price
5)I wanna slide around in the winter with the emergancy brake then let the AWD keep my on track

I get about 23mpg on average (mix of hwy and city). You'll actually save a ton of gas by running with a boost controller; when your motor blows, it doesn't use any more gas!

Just shift low, don't jump off the line when the light turns green and always make sure you have the correct tire pressure on all 4 tires.

i get about 20mpg in-town, and about 25 on highway
don't worry about the e-brake .... just stomp the gas 'n let the tires spin to slide
all i ever had to do to recover from a slide is let off the gas

The WRX is not an econobox regardless of how you drive it. The motor is inefficient off-boost due to the relatively low 8:1 compression, and of course it sucks more gas on-boost. If fuel economy is a major consideration for you then you may want to look at other cars.
And as far as #5 on your list, this is how lots of cars get crashed especially by newer, inexperienced drivers. AWD is not magic, in fact in some ways you are more likely to get into trouble with it until you become familiar with how it reacts, and what it will and won't do for you. When it snows it's usually the AWD SUV's that end up off the road and in ditches.

So a boost controller can blow my motor?
Driving at low rpms wont save me that much gas?.....22-25 isnt that bad
About 500 bucks more a year then a sunfire/cavalier would cost me....i think i can pay 500 bucks for the power and awd of the impreza

You will never get 22-25, trust me.
Even driving like a total grandma/wimp, I never break 20 (02 WRX, properly broken in, no mods, burns no oil). With the A/C on, I've never gotten better than 18 or sometimes even 16 MPG -- and this is driving on the freeway nice and steady, only a little stop-and-go driving.
Do a search, there must be dozens of threads on this subject, if not hundreds.

Yes a boost controller can blow your motor if not set and used properly. It is a very cheap mod that can end up being very dangerous and expensive. This is particularly true on the newer (04-up) WRX's which have revised factory engine management.
Meilers, if your car is fully stock and you're getting that low mileage something may be wrong. I suppose it could just be the AC load from the heat out there in AZ but there could be something else.

I know 3 other WRX owners here, and we all have 02 models and ge the same MPG. The A/C load is brutal on gas mileage (it shaves 40 miles off a tank of gas, for me). Also we drive 75-80 on the higway, not 65. Note that this is not a matter of choice, but of survival... The Phoenix area is so spread out, everyone from Geo Metros to the Hummers and Escalades rolls at top speed all the time -- go 60 and you'll get rear-ended, even in the right-hand lane.
We also get gas chock-full of MTBE and ethanol, 10% minimum year-round, and get to pay Cali prices for it, as AZ has no refineries. $2.39 a gallon for premium, that gets your attention.

I get around 24 mpg between San Jose and Palo Alto. My journey is a straight shot with very few stops which helps. Best ever was 27 on a long run down I5 to LA. I rarely get below 21 even when booting it unless I go play in the hills.
Hopefully you have a good contact for insurance. As a 17 yr old, this could be very expensive.
meilers: That sounds pretty reasonable for premium. Sunnyvale seems the cheapest around here and that is around $2.57. San Jose is around $2.67 and San Fran is closer to $3.00. A couple of weeks ago I managed to break the $40 mark filling the tank.

If you want to save on gas buy a honda, toyota, or suzuki. Subys are ok on gas despite the awd and premium, but dont expect to save on gas, chances are you will be pushing the car fast like its ment to be driven.

Well, If you somethings is fast will never save you gas. If you feel happy drive the car you love to have or you just get a cheap old car and make sure it run good with ac that will keep you going. Or, you can get the car you work hard for it and it is worth for you. You make the call.
im running a stage 2 from Cobb and i get horrible gas mileage. when i drive SUPER SOFT, i get about 18 - 19 mpg. spirited driving and real crazy driving gets me about the same.... 16.5-17 mpg. Straight highway driving for like 5 hours at 75 - 80 mph gets me +/- 25 mpg.
