I get about 23mpg on average (mix of hwy and city). You'll actually save a ton of gas by running with a boost controller; when your motor blows, it doesn't use any more gas!

Yea, that sometimes does not work and end up drifting into a mountain.

Just shift low, don't jump off the line when the light turns green and always make sure you have the correct tire pressure on all 4 tires.

I didn't see this part of your post originally. Have you considered an SRT-4? When you have a car with a center diff, it's usually not too bright an idea to lock up the rear wheels. That is unless you don't want a diff anymore. Just a thought.

i get about 20mpg in-town, and about 25 on highway

don't worry about the e-brake .... just stomp the gas 'n let the tires spin to slide
all i ever had to do to recover from a slide is let off the gas

The WRX is not an econobox regardless of how you drive it. The motor is inefficient off-boost due to the relatively low 8:1 compression, and of course it sucks more gas on-boost. If fuel economy is a major consideration for you then you may want to look at other cars.
And as far as #5 on your list, this is how lots of cars get crashed especially by newer, inexperienced drivers. AWD is not magic, in fact in some ways you are more likely to get into trouble with it until you become familiar with how it reacts, and what it will and won't do for you. When it snows it's usually the AWD SUV's that end up off the road and in ditches.

You will never get 22-25, trust me.

Even driving like a total grandma/wimp, I never break 20 (02 WRX, properly broken in, no mods, burns no oil). With the A/C on, I've never gotten better than 18 or sometimes even 16 MPG -- and this is driving on the freeway nice and steady, only a little stop-and-go driving.

Do a search, there must be dozens of threads on this subject, if not hundreds.

Yes a boost controller can blow your motor if not set and used properly. It is a very cheap mod that can end up being very dangerous and expensive. This is particularly true on the newer (04-up) WRX's which have revised factory engine management.
Meilers, if your car is fully stock and you're getting that low mileage something may be wrong. I suppose it could just be the AC load from the heat out there in AZ but there could be something else.

I know 3 other WRX owners here, and we all have 02 models and ge the same MPG. The A/C load is brutal on gas mileage (it shaves 40 miles off a tank of gas, for me). Also we drive 75-80 on the higway, not 65. Note that this is not a matter of choice, but of survival... The Phoenix area is so spread out, everyone from Geo Metros to the Hummers and Escalades rolls at top speed all the time -- go 60 and you'll get rear-ended, even in the right-hand lane.

We also get gas chock-full of MTBE and ethanol, 10% minimum year-round, and get to pay Cali prices for it, as AZ has no refineries. $2.39 a gallon for premium, that gets your attention.

I get around 24 mpg between San Jose and Palo Alto. My journey is a straight shot with very few stops which helps. Best ever was 27 on a long run down I5 to LA. I rarely get below 21 even when booting it unless I go play in the hills.

Hopefully you have a good contact for insurance. As a 17 yr old, this could be very expensive.

meilers: That sounds pretty reasonable for premium. Sunnyvale seems the cheapest around here and that is around $2.57. San Jose is around $2.67 and San Fran is closer to $3.00. A couple of weeks ago I managed to break the $40 mark filling the tank.

If you want to save on gas buy a honda, toyota, or suzuki. Subys are ok on gas despite the awd and premium, but dont expect to save on gas, chances are you will be pushing the car fast like its ment to be driven.

im running a stage 2 from Cobb and i get horrible gas mileage. when i drive SUPER SOFT, i get about 18 - 19 mpg. spirited driving and real crazy driving gets me about the same.... 16.5-17 mpg. Straight highway driving for like 5 hours at 75 - 80 mph gets me +/- 25 mpg.
