Future Engine Changes?
With the release of the Subaru Turbo Baja that carries a 210HP/235lb.ft 2.5L H4, I am wondering if Subaru will keep installing the 2.0L H4 in the WRX.
Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier for them to create one series of engine (2.5L Turbo and 2.5L N/A), with the turbo engines at various tune levels to meet the needs of Baja, Impreza WRX, and Impreza STi?
This would follow the successful way Nissan is using its 3.5L VQ V6 in many of their vehicles (Altima, Maxima, Pathfinder, 350Z, and their counterpart models in the Infiniti lineup; G35 Sedan and Coupe, QX4) with the engine modified slightly for the demands of each vehicle.
In addition, the 2.5L, even if it was detuned from STi spec to 230HP, would probably carry more torque at a lower RPM than the current 2.0L. And with variable valve timing response and performance would likely improve. So why not?

I agree with you, but this ONLY applies to USDM cars. The price for an impreza in Japan would go higer due to the taxes involved with an engine as big a 2.5 L. And that wouldn't be good, since a WRX costs more than an EVO already in Japan, don't want to give people even more reason to buy a Lancer over there.

I suspect the 2006(ish) WRX will move to the detuned 2.5 turbo, I just hope they'll put a new transmission in it that'll be better able to deal with it.
I know they've recently changed the rule, but did the WRC requirement of 2.0L apply only to cars being raced, or to the production version of the car as well?

That would be great if they put a detuned 2.5L in the next WRX. I'm going to get one in another year and a half or so, but with the thought of a new engine for this car in the near future I am wondering if it would be worthwhile to wait for it. But the 2.5 WRX is all speculation now. Time will tell for sure!

I would like to see the 2.0 in the Impreza for a little while still to keep the cost of the car down. If the 2.5 does come out in the rex, i have no doubt it would have more power than the 210hp version designed for torque in the Forester and Baja.
