frozen car?
I've just noticed my 00 rs making some strange sounds. as you may or may not know, it has been really cold lately. I live in toronto canada, and the temp for the past few days has been around -20 to -35 (i think -35 would be somewhere around -31 F
) anyways. the strange sound is most apparent when the car is in motion and the rpms are around 2.5K or above. I let off the gas and i hear this low growling type sound. it sounds as if almost something was rubbing against either the wheels or the driveshaft. The car seems louder driving as well. but this is only apparent when the car is in gear. when it is in neutral everything seems fine. has anyone experianced similar issue when it is REALLY cold? is it possible that there is some frozen snow around the drive shaft that might be causing this sound? (I did go drifting on a parking lot the day before, i didn't hit anything and the parking lot was super smooth with little snow cover). this is my first winter with this car so i don't know what to expect.

My boss had a problem that sounds similar to yours with his 2001 Jetta and it turned out to be a bad wheel bearing. However because it only makes the sound when you are in gear it may not be that.
it's probably just snow rubbing somewhere like the wheel or like you said driveshaft. Take it through a carwash or something to get the underside a good hot spray to see if it will melt off.
I'm pretty sure a wheel bearing is a chirping or scuffing sound that can be heard going faster as you go faster. I think one of my bearings is making noise.. it only really can be heard going between 20-40 kph.
Otherwise, if you're that worried, take it in for a check up... better safe than sorry.
