It's a very old review and UK-based, but it illustrated the stock WRX's lack of highway pull:

If you're looking for a one car solution, you may want to wait for the STI or consider the EVO.

keep the z and get the wrx. nissan car last forever because three of my friends has z's and one of their mileage is over 200,000 miles and still going. no problem with anything. for myself i dont like that dam understeer on my rs, at least you'll have oversteer and understeer.

Your car is 13 (almost 14) model years old. The WRX would be brand new. Owning a brand new car is one of the joys in my life. Keep the 300z and turn it into a weekend basher and daily-drive the WRX.

A comparable switch to your Z is the new 350Z, G35 coupe, or C5 vette.
These are big engine big power sports cars designed for eating smooth roads without fanfare and enjoying every minute of it. The new Z, as the older one, doesn't much care for real roads in the Chicago land area as we don't have smooth roads, in general. Real world driving means ruts, broken pavement, potholes, etc... Modern suspensions do a good job of keeping the car under control at speed when hitting these less than optimal conditions.
The one wonderfully eye opening experience you'll find in the WRX is it's ability to make crap roads a non issue. The suspension has long travel with excellent damping which gives great control and a smooth ride over the various roads conditions of the real world.
The WRX is a different car and not a good candidate for comparison to the older Z. In terms of driving fun, it's just as much fun if not more. The WRX is simply a fun car to drive even if simply going on short errands where your speed may never even get up to highway speeds. This car simply responds, goes where you point it, and makes you smile as you experience the ease of driving this sport sedan. It rocks.
If you can keep the Z, do it. The older Z is an awesome car and much loved by the sport driving enthusiast world and moto journalists. But, so is the WRX even if it lacks the big top end.
The WRX can be modded to get some monster HP and, more importantly, torque numbers. I don't think you'd be dissapointed with the WRX if you're looking for a solid, well built, fast, responsive, mod-able, sports car.
It's not nearly as pretty to look at as the current Z or the previous gen Z, but the WRX's beauty resides on the inside and in it's connection to the drivers visceral sport driving needs.
