CD-R's don't work in my factory player?
I just bought an '04 Outback wagon, and it seems that CD-R's don't play in my CD player. Well, they sort of play....I just get a lot of static and scratching noises. Does anyone else actually use their Subaru factory CD players, and do you have this problem? Seems like most of you guys are pretty hardcore and have upgraded to better systems. Just wondering if any CD-R's will play. I am using Memorex brand CD-R's right now.
At first I thought my CD player was screwed up, but I suppose the "Not all CD-R's will play in the CD player" comment in the owner's manual should have tipped me off before I made that appointment with the dealer to get it looked at.

In my '03 WRX, all 6 CDs in the player are CD-R's and they all play perfectly. I think some are CompUSA brand (650MB), Memorex (700MB), and Fuji (700MB).
I think I have your answer... You should be able to play any CD-R in your changer, but the issue is how you are creating the music disc. You need to "finalize" the cd in order for it to play in all cd systems. If you do not finalize it, you would be able to add additional data to the disc, but it will not play in all of the CD systems. I have an 04 sedan with the 6 disc and do not have any issues with playing CD-Rs from many different manufacturers. What cd burning application are you using?

OK- I work as a network engineer and may be able to help.
First - What speed are you burning at?
Is the media Deep blue or more silver? The lighter the disk the better. Make sure they not RW's
You might want to try burning your disk at 10X or less. I burn my music CD's on a HP 9300.
I only use copied disks in my 2004 STI in the 6 disk player. No problems

Wow...you guys are good.
Maybe because you all have the six CD changer, that makes a difference. I am guessing since that is a $550 upgrade, it can do a little more than my standard single player can.
I am using Roxio to burn my CD's and I do make sure I finalize the CD (it prompts you to when you are done burning). I have no idea at which speed I am burning, but I will check that out and try burning at 10X or less. I am using silver CD-R's, not CD-RW's.
Thanks guys!

the stock single disc unit in my OBS played CD-Rs I think(i pulled it out like 3 days after i got the car).
Alot of it depends on the brand of media you're using. Try Fuji if you can find it. They seem to work very well in alot of finnicky players.

cd-r's are no different when compared to cd's u buy at the store. all a cd-r is, is just a blank one that u can put your own things on. Try putting the cd into a stereo system and see if it will play. What i did notice is that the stock cd players on subaru aren't really that great and do skip even when there are light scratches.
All cd-r are not created equal AzN some do work better than others. I have some (the kind with no writing surface) that will play one day and not the next.
I have the stock single disk player and have had no problems when I use good disks.
Btw my player doesn't like playing any disk first thing in the morning except the one that is in it, after about ten minutes I can change the disk.
