car vibrating at high speed
car vibrating at high speed
not sure where I should post this question in the correct section, so I'll just post here.
So, I've noticed my car would get this shaky or vibrating around 70+ mph on freeway.
I did the alignment, got new lug nuts(was using stock one) and new tires. This problem doesn't seem to go away and it's quiet annoying sometimes.
What could cause this problem?
Thanks for help

Poor alignment may cause pulling or uneven tire wear, but it won't be the reason for vibration or shaking. This is most often the result of unbalanced or bent wheels. In some cases it can also be from a bent or unbalanced axle or driveshaft.

I'd look at the wheels beeing out of balance first, then go from there.
It's always been my experience with wheels being out of balance that the shake gets noticeable at around 70mph.
If you want to try and trouble shoot yourself, I'd switch your back tires to the front and see if the problem persists (hoping that the backs are balanced)
You are feeling the shake in the steering wheel right?

Dont fret.... You probably just lost a wheel balancer weight. They come off occasionally. Make sure the knuckleheads at your tire shop put on balancers that use a clip and snap into place and NOT the ones that just adhere on the inside of the wheel. I was losing weights once a week literally cuz the guys at Tirerack kept putting on the wrong weight. Just look around your car and make sure the weights are all there. If its something worse like wheel bearings youd hear a pulsing thud like sound that increases as the car gains speed....Hope this helps

I feel you man..... I used to drive from the bay to Palm Desert and the 5 can be hell on suspension components and the constant high speed is just the recipe for losing wheel weights and damaging wheel bearings
hmm, interesting. Yes, I can feel the vibration from the steering wheel. Perhabs I should go back to american tire and ask them balance the tires again. They used the adhere type.
I don't think the wheels are bent since I got them off my friend's STi. He didn't seem to have that problem.
thanks for the information

Don't assume the wheels aren't bent, you can't always tell just by looking at them. The only way to check for sure is to watch the wheel/tire as it spins on a balance machine, if anything is bent or out of round it will be apparent then.
It is also possible to have a problem with a tire such as a separated belt which may still allow the wheel to be balanced but will cause a vibration when on the road.
