Buying an 05 STI - Advice

Now I see a WRX thread already, and I hate to create a bunch of these, but I feel that I must.

So I've been looking at a 2004-05 STI, between 40-60K miles. Probably going to bite the bullet this fall or winter.

What do you guys suggest that I look for? I do know that I want one 100% stock and definitely no home garage modifications.

Anything that I should know in terms of mechanical issues at around 40-60k?

A friend suggested that I watch about for bad syncros, how can you tell?

Thanks again everyone.

yeah, it's a must to find a stock one if you can, that's what i did. as long as it was cared for, you should be ok. the basic drivetrain warrenty is good till 60k, so if you can find one with around 40k, you'll have some time still left if something goes wrong. your friend does make a good point, i test drove an used 04 before i bought mine which had a really sloppy feeling trans, kind of like it didn't fully go into gear and you almost felt like you had to hold it there in case it popped out, i passed on that one and found mine which was still very tight and felt so much better. so i guess he means feel for play in the gears and if it grinds at all. if you can take someone with you who knows all about what to look for. sorry for the long post...good luck!

STI's are great, but buying a used one is another thing. Majority of them have either been raced or modded up, other wise why buy a sti heh. Drive the car, make sure they have all the paper work up to date, carfax would be great. Really if you like a particular car, theres nothing to stop you from getting it. Just be aware of what you are purchasing.

Take the plunge and purchase a Subaru Sti you will not regret it.
I never heard of bad syncrons on a 04-05 Sti before but, anything
is possible if the vehicle was abused, mistreated,or the owner didn't
know how to properly shift the transmission.Honestly all Subaru's
are very good vehicles and if you do your maintenance they will last.
Make sure you get a carfax report on the Subaru you purchase
and make sure the body lines match up(no car accidents).
All Subaru's have excellent resale value too.Volkwagon's right now
in the car market are one of the worst to own and have low resale
value by the way so,it would be a great move for you to buy a Subaru!
Happy Subaru shopping and Welcome to i-Club.

I don't mean to get to off topic. But I do plan on trading in my car and putting some extra cash on top. Now I know in Washington you can get a Tax credit when you trade in your car.

Can someone explain how a tax credit works? I tried googling it but maybe I was seaching in the wrong place.

Thanks again.
