Break in period
Break in period
Hi everyone. Im about to pick up my 04 wrx towmarrow. How many miles should I break it in for? Ive heard anywhere from 500-1000 miles, but thats a pretty big descrepency. Just wondering what people have done and there expirence afterwards. It sucks that I cant push the car for a little while. Guess im just going to have to drive a lot this week.

Manual says under 4000rpm for 1000 miles, and to vary the speed.
i didn't have the determination and will power to stay under 4000 rpm. After about 300 miles, I gave up trying. The car begs to be driven hard! As of now, I only have 700 miles, but i have driven it hard a few (about a dozen) times.

My WRX rolled over 1000 miles yesterday, it was pretty cool, it was just after I had a friend take a picture of me on a dirt construction course I set up. I did this turn and had dirt spiral around me, I looked at the RPMs, and saw the milage, I was pretty stoked.

We asked the dealer that same question when we picked the car up a week ago. We were told not to go over 4000rpm for the first 1000km. The car just hit the 300km marker and has not gone past the 4500rpm mark. it not going to be easy to hold back on the gas but if that's what it takes to get the most out of the engine, so be it.

I figured this much. Thanks for your response guys. Keeping this beast under 4k rpms for the first thousand miles is gonna be harder than quitting smoking but I dont want to sacrifice its durability so im gonna try my best. So highway driving is probably a bad idea? My plan was to just drive back and forth between Connecticut and Boston a couple times in the next week. But now it sounds like that might do more harm than good.

shouldn't it be 1600km??
I've tried my hardest to baby my WRX so far. I've got almost 500 miles on mine and I have only gone over 4000 RPM about 10 times. The most the car has seen is 6000 RPM, and I did that only once. Any other time I've gone over the 4000 RPM mark, it has only been up to 5000 RPM. Each time I hit 5000 RPM, I comforted myself by saying it was "an emergency situation". The owners manual says don't go over 4000 RPM except in an emergency situation.
It's so hard to baby that car. It begs to be reved. I personally don't think hitting 5000 RPM very minimally within the break-in period is going to cause any damage.
