87 in WRX?
hello all, I asked this is question in another forum but I would like more input.
Upon purchasing a brand new WRX, the dealer (who really knew his stuff) told me it would be OK to use 87 octane in my car. So at the half way point, i put in 87 and now I noticed an immense decrease in power.
Im pretty sure I didnt damage the engine, but I have a few questions.
1. Right now im at the half way point again. Should i refill with 91 octane now, or wait until the gas tank goes down further?
2. Someone suggested that I go to a Subaru dealer and get the memory reset. Is that necessary?
3. The dealer also told me that the 4 speed auto (which is what i have) is as fast as the 5 speed manuel. Is this true?
Thanks for your time.

Sounds like the dealer DIDN'T know his stuff, he just knew what to tell you to buy the car.
Get some 92 or 93 in there as soon as possible.
I don't know about the ecu but i'd imagine you'd want that done too.

What I mean is in my car if I wanna take off I downshift and floor it and get no lag from the turbo, in an auto, you floor it, the ecu responds and may downshift but also may think the RPM's would be too high to downshift so you would get more lag and also the time it takes for the ecu to respond and everything.

The WRX's are designed to run best with 91 octane fuel. However, your dealer was correct in that you CAN run 87, but your power level will be decreased. Subaru's are equiped with a knock sensor that will automatically retard timing if knock occurs, which happens if a lower octane fuel is used, which makes your car slower. By adding 91 octane and driving it hard for a week or two, you can make the ECU advance timing again, gaining back your lost power.

Yeah, what he said, that's why with the 93-94 (or 100 that I ran at Willow Springs) makes you quicker, cause you're getting the ECU to advance timing. Next time I hit the track I'm using 115 leaded.

You're in Pennsylvania? Someone mentioned in another forum that they used Sunoco 94 for their STI and that it was at a PA turnpike rest stop... you can do a search for it or others like it. Here in Cali there are quite a few 76 stations that carry it, or Road Race Engineering in Santa Fe Springs has it in 5 gallon barrels but they carry up to 100 unleaded and up to 118 leaded, but they also have one called 118 plus that they haven't even gotten up the ***** to use cause it comes with a skull and crossbones on the barrel.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I really appreciate it.
I just fueled with 91 (the highest octane i could find here in simi valley, CA) at the half way point and the car seems to be running a tad bit quicker, but not as fast as it was before.
Do you guys think i should reset the ECU? if i didnt, what would happen?
Thanks in advance

Did a search for you and came up with this... http://www.76.com/cgi-bin/b2cpt01/scripts/mapQuery.jsp
100 octane... once you try it everything else is obsolete.

Oh, my link didn't show the what I found, just enter your city, and click on race fuel and click on 20 mile radius and you'll see two stations that carry 100 octane... good luck.
Boston weve got 93. If you wanna reset your ecu just disconnect the battery for a bit and then reatatch the cables..thats all it teaks and you can start with a clean plate. If you wanna save a buck with each fill up then try 89..it might work a bit better..But honestly, if you bought the car for the right reasons and want to enjoy it then just shell out the extra 15 or 20 cents a gallon, its worth it.
