I think the world rally car is still a 2.0. That's pretty cool. I think thew next gen wrx will get the 2.5 though.

i thought the whole point of the wrx, sti, was to compete in the wrc. doesn't that have a 2.0 limit?

the American sti is kinda geared to the general "american view" that you need displacement to make power.

at least thats what i thought

i think your right about the 2.0 limit. and as for the 2.5. Subaru needed a powerhouse engine to out hp the evo in the us.

The USDM STI has the 2.5 for us torque hungry low down power americans. The JDM STi has the 2.0 and that is the one they use in WRC.

I'm not a purist. I'd like to see the 2.5 liter engine in the WRX for the additional torque and power. I personally don't care if it doesn't match the displacement of the WRC car since that is regulated by a strict set of rules for competition. The WRC competition engine shares very few parts with the USDM street engine. As long as it is a Subaru four-cylinder boxer engine I want whatever will make the most power right off the showroom floor. I don't think it's right that the Forester XT can accelerate harder than the WRX.

I think the 2.5 in the baja/forrester/legacy is the same, but obviously the STi 2.5 is different.

they made the STI a 2.5 so they could extract the same amout of power as the JDM 2.0 cars using the ****ty gas we have.

or atleast, thats the noise on the street.

I'm guessing it's a marketing move. If the WRX has the same block and HP numbers creep up on the STi, less people would buy the STi. Subaru is doing fine with both WRX and STi models. Those who want something quick but can't afford the STi can get a WRX or FXT while those who want the ultimate Subaru and have the dough can get the STi. It's for these same reasons that Chevy never made the Camaro perform the way a Corvette does. Even the FXT's HP output was underrated to 210hp while it has been tested to put somewhere between 230 and 240hp. I heard it's b/c *maybe* Subaru didn't want to upset WRX owners. Just what I've heard, not my opinion....thoughts?

Because then the STi would get the larger turbo it deserves, and make much more power.

There might be something to both statements. STi owners might now feel slighted if the WRX would gain additional power. There always needs to be a distinct performance advantage between the two. The performance of the STi seems to be geared towards staying a step above the current USDM Lancer Evolution. I worry a little that Mitsubishi's misfortunes will mean that more powerful versions of the EVO may not be forthcoming. If this is the case, Subaru may not want to continue with the 'arms escalation' when the competition is no longer a threat to its market.
