I have an '04 WRX wagon and it too knocks a bit after starting on a cold morning. Certainly something I don't like the sound of but from what I can tell it's common.
When I take it in for the 7500 miler I'll probably mention it or if it gets worse.

the exhaust is normal when cold. for instance, in my case, i have a hks carbon Ti catback, a big 4.5" tip....thing looks like it's a white flame thrower at night =P
